best CPU for AMD 770 chipset?

Going through my box of old parts to upgrade a family member's PC. They have agreed to run folding in exchange for an upgrade.

I have a pair of Abit AX78 boards, that are the nicest, newest I have to offer them. Currently have a Phenom 9550 & 9850 on them.

Specs say AMD 770 chipset, which agrees with the BIOS, however the AMD website doesn't list a 770 chipset. Many hardware ID software mislabel this chipset as a 780 or even 790 to add even more confusion to the mix.

I don't know how accurate it is, but this site lists this chipset as being compatible with all the Phenom II X4 and Phenom II X6 cpus. I do remember these boards were prior to the release of the Phenom II line. I don't know (never tried) whether this chipset actually would support a Phenom II of any variety. I'd be buying a CPU most likely, if there is a decent upgrade (I remember when I retired these boards my replacement ran a Phenom II 965 but it's not going to be possible, or at least really inconvenient to steal that CPU to test it on this board).

For those that remember back that far, can you help me out? I'm looking for the best performance-per-core CPU this board could handle. Thanks in advance.

I ran an FX8350 at 4.3 GHz and 100% load for several years, but I had an early motherboard from HP that only had a four pin cpu connector and it fried the connectors three times. You should have no problem with it since your board has 8 pins.

I certainly don't know the "best" cpu, but I liked the FX-8350.

If it has an AM3 socket, I'd probably go for either a Phenom II X4 980 ($130), or an FX 8370 ($170).

But a more affordable Phenom II X4 970 or 975; or an FX 8350 can be very cheaply found on ebay nowadays (less than $50).

If you check the motherboard cpu support list you will find only AM2 and AM2+ cpus are supported.
