I found a rig for sale. Is it good for folding

Post by Akaanc »

Hello,

I found a used rig for a good price. It was used for mining but I thought I can use it for folding.

It has 6 x Gigabyte Rx580

Asrock H81 Pro BTC R2.0 Board
G3258 processor
4 GB Ram
500 GB HDD
Everest 1650 Power

Should I look for other options or can I buy a prebuild rig like that.

Depends on what you paid for it, and how serious you are about folding...
The RX580s are a bit older technology.
They're about as fast as a GTX 1060; which gets around 300-350k PPD.
If that's true, 3 of them would fold about as fast as a single RTX2060.
The 2060, using 160 Watts stock, can be made to do nearly the same at 125 Watts.

2 x RX580s use about the same power as 3x RTX 2060s.

My only advice to you, is to take power consumption cost into consideration!
With 6 of these cards, you'll be pulling around 1500Watts of power,
Running this 24/7 will cost you around $1500 annually on electricity.
Keep that in mind!

This will work for FAH but has some disadvantages for points per day (PPD).
- If you pay for electricity then nvidia GPUs have better PPD per watt in general for FAH.
- It only has 2 CPU cores but 6 GPUs and FAH uses one CPU thread per GPU to feed it, so this limits PPD.
- It uses pcie 2.0 x1 risers which can limit PPD. On Linux you want pcie 3.0 x1 risers for fast GPUs and on Windows no risers but pcie 3.0 x4 slots.

If you get 330k PPD per rx580 this will be 2000k PPD for 6x rx580 at 1000 watts.

If you build a rig with 2x rtx 2060 super instead it gets also 2000k PPD but at 350 watts.

If power usage and heat generation is not a problem then this rig works for you.
