GPU For the best RESULTS***

Post by Green »

any way of knowing if a vega, which is 10,000 or so flops will actually give better results than a 2060 or 70. I say this because I was told the 5700 series doesnt get good results across other distributed computing platforms, tho what I gather is it has moved on to beta testing on folding. Whatever, I have a computer sitting at my apartments front office in parts, hope I dont mess up the build, but that is not here nor there, im looking for cards with the best results, not perticularly the fastest.

The problem of current AMD GPUs (Vega, R7 and 5700XT) is that they are very sensitive to the type of WU they run. You can get form terrible PPD on small proteins to great PPD on bigger ones.

It seems that in production projects currently in beta testing, the 5700 XT is equivalent to a 2060 on FAH with ~1.4M PPD.

So the choice is mainly about what else you're going to use your GPU for and your budget.

How do you measure "best"? If it's strictly a measurement of FAH PPD, then except it (very) rare cases, best will use the fastest GPU. If best includes other factors, we can't really advise you.

In general nvidia GPUs are currently better for folding than AMD.

2060 is 1.04M PPD. The 2080 is 1.4M PPD.
With core 22, 2060=1.2xM and 2080 is 1.5x-1.7xM PPD.
Nvidia is chosen for people who fold 24/7, not only because they're much more energy efficient by default, but also because they can be tweaked to be between 20-40% even more energy efficient than stock, which makes them do twice the amount of data at the same watt as AMD.
AMDs 5700 XT bests out at 190W(that is after tuning), running their cores at 1,5Ghz, while a 2080 does the same or better at 139W (cores between 1800-1900Mhz).

The power saving benefits get doubled, if you factor in ac as a way to keep your room cool (with Nvidia you'll get ~350W for 2x 2080 GPUs on heat, with AMD you'll get ~450W on heat to combat).

If you're just testing hardware, or fold less than 8 hours a week, or pay nothing for electricity, AMD is a good alternative.

The question you should be asking is: Which one works best with my games?
