Is anybody still interested in recommendations for inexpensive secondhand GPUs?

I do have news. Fermi GPUs are old and probably inexpensive except for power costs. Most (all?) of them have been disabled due to changes to GPUs.txt. They support OpenCL 1.1, not 1.2 which disqualifies them from most projects.

The news is that CUDA may soon be supported by FAHCore_22. (I have no prediction how long it will take.) Nevertheless, it seems that Fermi GPUs will switch to CUDA instead of OpenCL which will PROBABLY remove the restriction. I can't make any promises until everything gets written and tested, but you might start keeping an eye on prices for used Fermi GPUs.

If CUDA support comes, would this take advantage of the GPU memory for processing instead of using the system memory?

No. FAH processing doesn't really need much GPU memory.

You can go to http://openmm.org/, dig through the open source code, gain an understanding of the internal workings of the code, and propose an enhancement.
