Possibly create batches for older GPU`s

Post by Strandkievit »

In these times of Covid-battles, I find it extra bitter that my NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT is outdated.
I feel quite a lot of folding-participants also have their gpu`s sitting idle; is it perhaps possible to find ways to distribute work for these unused powers?

Sincerely, Remko

Welcome to the F@H Forum Strandkievit,

When it comes to folding on GPUs, recently, they need to support OpenCL 1.2 and Double Precision. The requirements are due to the need of scientific code requiring them.

Unfortunately, your GPU is ~12 years old and lacks those requirements: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... 00-gt.c635 :(

While your GPU can't fold, it is possible that you may consider folding on your CPU since they are COVID-19 WUs which can only run on CPUs :)

I am not sure but you can always see if BONIC projects that you would like to support can still use your GPU or not.

Thanks for wanting to contribute but please you cannot expect a scientific project to work on something as old as your 9800GT. Modern cards are 100s if not 1000s of times faster and there is a significant benefit in this work being completed quickly.

It would need there to be a thousand of you to equal a single 2080TI.

 I am completely enlightened; `till I upgrade my card, I let my [old] AMD Phenom II X4 945 @3000 work the loads.
Thanks for the feedback.

And also, boinc has stopped units for this gpu some time ago, for various other projects too.
