Re: Found an old machine and want to fold with it

Post by MeeLee »

After dodging the bullet for almost a year (by not being online), I finally got it,
The BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) after a Windows Update.
Wouldn't reboot, or fix the issue.
Had to reinstall everything!
Thankfully there's a reinstall option that sitll allows you to keep your files (only some programs need reinstalling).
It's one of the ways I had hoped to avoid the BSOD, by just not being online with that PC often, but when I finally do update (thinking all these problems are past), I got stung!

OK, so I followed the very modest instructions provided by PantherX

For Nvidia GPUs, you would need:
[X] 1) Ensure that Linux is fully updated.
[X] 2) Install the proprietary drivers by Nvidia
[X] 3) Install OpenCL package (sudo apt-get install ocl-icd-opencl-dev)
[X] 4) Install FAHClient

Everything went through without any problem.

But...

No GPU in the FAH client.

What can the Pros tell me from that.

I also installed the CUDA Toolkit. But I guess that is not supposed to help me.

The CUDA toolkit can rather be a problem. You should uninstall it.
And if you add a GPU slot in FAHControl?

I marked GPU under "Configure folding slots" and simply pressed OK. A GPU with -1 appeared in the folding slots list. When hitting save an error appeared telling me there is no GPU available.
I deinstalled the CUDA Toolkit but that did not change anything either.

Looks like you could not download gpu.txt. You can find it here: https://apps.foldingathome.org/GPUs.txt
And it should be in /var/lib/fahclient

That's interesting, I can not find the folder where it is supposed to be. No fahclient under /var/lib/fahclient. I also marked "show hidden content"

EDIT: I created the folder and iserted the GPUs.txt, but that did not change anything...

Then you might look into /var/snap/folding-at-home-fcole90
I have never seen that, but your installation log says FAH is using this for your work folder.

Code: Select all

EDIT: I guess you installed this: viewtopic.php?f=106&t=34148&p=324024&hilit=fcole90#p324024

The "no GPU available" message means that your GPU cannot find the required OpenCL support. If it were Windows, I'd suggest rebooting before starting FAH. ... but you're looking at Linux ....

Did you install Folding@Home as a snap container application?
What distribution of Linux are you using?
In general for any basic Ubuntu distribution you only need install version 18.04 latest update, Proprietary drivers from the Ubuntu repository (opencl and cuda auto included these days), client from Folding@Home. Then it's just a matter of configuration.

Did you set 'gpu' to 'true' in the client's advanced configuration?

I installed the „tested“ Version from the Linux Software Center/App Store whatever it is called. I will install the newest version from the official webpage.

I am using Ubuntu 20.04.

I installed the Nvidia driver and the OpenCL package separately.

I will check this.

General question: as you saw in the log I paused the client after turning it on for the First time. So I do not get a WU that takes days to finish. So I turned off the Internet when installing it. Maybe this caused the missing GPUs.txt. Is it better to start the client with an active Internet connection on first launch?

The first thing that FAHClient does when it starts is to check on the existence of GPUs.txt and download it if it's missing our out-of-date. FAH cannot function until it is present.

You can find it at https://apps.foldingathome.org/GPUs.txt. It normally resides in FAHs data directory.

Gpu was set to false. I changed it to true.

When I add the GPU in the Slots tab the Client seems to refresh for a second but the GPU does not appear...
But no Error... Just no GPU

I found something about Pausing the client, and then rebooting with gpu=true or false. Could this be a solution for me? Does the client searches differently for available GPUs with different values?
Apart from this, according to the log it seems that FAH indeed recognizes the GPU, but simply does not want to talk to it..

Try deleting the gpu.txt file.
Or, if that doesn't work, finish your current WUs, and then delete the 'work' folder.
It'll automatically update the work folder and GPU file.

When you look at the expert configuration settings, The gpu false setting line can be highlighted and removed. As it should only be set if your graphics card is neither OpenCL v1.2 (or newer); or NVIDIA CUDA ready.
