GTX 1060 3GB only 160k PPD

Hello Everyone,

as some may know I reactivated an old machine and upgraded it a bit for part time folding.
The machine is up and running. My only concern is, that the GPU only produces 160K PPD.

As discussed in my initial thread, one reason could be that we shut down the machine every day (after finishing the last WU) and change users including passkeys.
But lately I checked and found the GPU temp at ~69 deg and the GPU fan at around 68 deg. Maybe I do not get the full bonus due to changing users and passkeys but shouldn't the graphics card fold as fast as it can? 68% fan speed sounds enthusiastic but not like fill load.

Could this be a driver problem? Could this be a Linux problem?

Don't equate temperature to load.
The airflow through your computer, room temperature, gpu cooling solution will all have different effects on a loaded up graphics card.
I changed my setup so both my folding cards are in the same machine. They're both running 95-100% load but on reduced power targets (~60%), one is 78 deg, the other is 62 deg.

Take a look at the NVIDIA-SMI command, it's in the Windows and linux drivers and can be used to both monitor and manipulate your graphics cards.

Low score, hmmm.
Changing passkey + userID - I know there is a minimum of 10 units returned before a bonus can be earned but I don't know if that's per slot, within a time period, or just total for that userID + passkey (assuming the passkey has been entered correctly and is valid).
Part-time use - The work unit has got to be returned within the initial timeout period to earn bonus points, after that it's down to base points. If you hit the expiry, oh dear, the unit is dropped and no points (well, I think that's what happens anyway).
Folding speed - The card will fold as fast as you let it but there's no guarantee the work unit is big enough to fully utilise it. Others can advise better but it's possible your processor is holding you back as well, the gpu needs a dedicate cpu thread to handle memory swaps between the system RAM and gpu RAM as well as to carry out sanity checks on the progress of your gpu.

These are only my thoughts and may be completely wrong.

Absolutely. You are totally right. If this is the case I never expected such a low fan speed and GPU-temp at room temperature.

I will check the GPU load using the NVIDIA-SMI tool. This is what I needed. When it says ~100% the changing usernames and passkeys have to be the reason.

EDIT: I checked... Utilization 97%. So it is most likey the passkey

Part-time use - The work unit has got to be returned within the initial timeout period to earn bonus points, after that it's down to base points. If you hit the expiry, oh dear, the unit is dropped and no points (well, I think that's what happens anyway)...
The return of 10 WUs is per combination of username/passkey, it isn't tied to a Slot or system or team. Once a combination is qualified, it remains until it is disqualified.

Changing passkeys and/or usernames is absolutely not the way to maximize PPDs. If you judge by the WU count, are you talking about fewer wus per day? That won't change although it might be limited by your power limits reducing your actual performance.

Your GPU has 1152 shader cores which is neither particularly large or small compared to other active GPUs. It's enough to reduce the OpenCL performance for especially small proteins. I have not evaluated that effect when running CUDA.

I found the problem why the Bonus does not kick in....

I have a passkey and I entered it correct (copied it from the email, several times)
But checking the "recent CPUs" - Page of FAH the work units of this client are all marked as no bonus counted (0).
The problem seems to be that the client does not want to eat my passkey. It says it matches, but at the end the bonus does not kick in.

I read the advice, to use a separate passkey fot each client. But on the FAH FAQ page it says "Use one and only one Passkey for all clients". What is adviced, one or several passkeys?
I am using a second passkey now and see if that works.

Yep, I already used it. For the new passkey no information is available, I guess because no WUs were completed using it.

But that means there is a different reason why the passkey is not accepted.

When you copied it, did you accidentally include the trailing space? Have you verified that the config.xml has the same passkey that is in the email?

In the FAH FAQ I read, that simply adding the passkey into the xml file may corrupt it. How would be the correct way to do it?

Please reduce the logging level back to 3 the default so that only the changes in default values are shown. Anything higher than 3 doesn't help out in 99.99%

Did you use FAHControl to enter the passkey? If not, there's every reason to beleive you did not enter it successfull

Passing it as a command-line parameter works. So does a FAHControl edit of your config.xml.

In any case, there will be no bonus until that User:Passkey has successfully completed 10 WU (no matter how many clients use that pair).
