Overclock for GPU F@H

Postby privater » Wed Jun 18, 2008 3:37 pm

Tested some freq about Core /Mem/Shader
found that Overclock Shader is the most effcient way to improve performance.
And ,we know that Shader clock only affect temprature a little
Core Clock only affect Result a little.
Memory Clock almost useless.
so we can simply downgrade core clock, give more room for Shader overclock
and downgrade mem clock help to reduce heat generation.
and GREATLY increase the Shader Clock。Which result best performance.
Tested by 8800GT. :D

This is a very shader-bound app, and I'm really curious to see what kind of perf you guys can squeeze out of 8xxx and 9xxx GPUs... it should be fun...

Yep, overclocking the memory does little for performance in fah. Same thing we've seen on the ATI cards for a while now.

cause not allow to paste images, just write some raw datas:
I got best PPD score 5.6k - 6k @ 650/2000/2050 in fahmon. 2780-2850 li/s in Display
and PPD score 5.3K @710/2000/1830 fahmon,2550-2600 in Display
compare to default score 4.5K @600/2000/1600 fahmon
about 30% imporvement overal, and the good news is the core tempture only around 61c 。1c lower from @710/2000/1830 to @ 650/2000/2050 Score higher 10% :D
The Fahlog file precision is limited to second, sometime you must wait a moment to see the difference.

Turn off the Display... Just don't run the app...

2 GHZ? Wild...

These freqs will crash in game benchmark for a few minutes, but stable for F@h 10+ WUs...
However,if I overclocked Shader above 2150,the F@h will found error in a few cycles.although decrease core clockto 500 is helpless
.so I downgrade it to 2050 and stay there to acquire percision calulate time.

This is really interesting, most older G80 cards like mine have very underclocked shaders... 1188MHz instead of 1500MHz they were designed to run at. I know my card runs them fine at a full 1500MHz, but it has been tested that for game performance overclocking the GPU core almost always results in the largest performance gains, with shaders in second place and RAM in third.

Once I manage to actually complete a few WUs I may start overclocking my card. After switching to the proper drivers go I got up to 96% complete then ran into some serious problems though, so any overclocking will have to wait. :?

Good call on this one guys. I was able to unlink my shader and core frequency on my 8800 GTS's, so I lowered the core clock to 385mhz, lowered the memory clock to 595, and raised the shader clock to 1513 so far. My performance in the app has gone up about 30 percent, but my temperature for the card has dropped 10 degrees C so far. HUGE difference since my G80 core cards run hot to begin with.

I tested overclocking only the shaders on the 9600 GT, but it never helped ... I needed to keep overclocking core AND shaders to improve performance.

Are you all using RivaTuner to overclock the shaders?

Yes ... and I now have hardcoded the new value in the BIOS.

4300 ppd to 5200 PPd now shader core is now 1600 thats up from 1350 default (576 clock / ram 1800 was the default left as thay are for now GPU temp is 85c) i guess my games are going to be smoother as well now (maybe stick the GPU core clock up an notch see if that does any thing) i got one of the first 8800GTX cards so the shader clock may be very low as it seems

I've overclocked my shader from 1566MHz to 1900MHz, and I'm not seeing a performance increase...what gives?!?

GPU is at 700, Memory at 970...I have excellent cooling on the card.

Same for me ... but if you overclock the GPU whille keeping shader frequency linked, you'll se a performance increase.
