A new Nvidia core (v1.07) for users w/ multi-gpu boards

Postby friedrim » Tue Jul 01, 2008 5:51 pm

A new Nvidia core (v1.07) has been posted at link removed, see below. -- toTOW. Scott has added support for a new environment variable, NV_FAH_CPU_AFFINITY, that allows the user to directly set the processor affinity mask or set it to zero to disable all affinity settings. The CPU affinity is set with individual bits (it's a mask, not a CPU selector):
setting NV_FAH_CPU_AFFINITY to
1 ==> CPU 0
2 ==> CPU 1
3 ==> CPU 0 and 1
4 ==> CPU 2
8 ==> CPU 3
15 ==> CPUs 0-3
etc

If this variable is undefined, the default behavior is exhibited. A primer on Windows environment variables is at http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~louis/software/faq/q1.html. Please test it by manually deleting an existing core. Thanks.

Removed link : this core has been withdrawn outside public distribution path. Please do not ask where you should get it, and wait for an official release or update. -- toTOW

For people having PPD slowdowns (esp with quad core mobos), please check this out.

I'm seeing some increases on one of my machines: 8600M GT (177.41; XP). Used to do 1140 PPD, now it is doing 1172 PPD :D. I don't know if there are any increases on my 8800GT (Vista Ultimate x64). It seems to be the same, though it could be slightly increased.

Ok, I am curious, what has changed for multi-gpu boards in this beta?? Sofar all the explanations are about CPU affinity. Please provide some more insight / clarity into the changes for this beta. Thanks :?

I think they had a typo. I think the title should have read "... for users with multi - CPU boards". :) (slaps friedrim across the face with a haddock)

Mod Edit: You are incorrect in your assumption. The title IS correct. Slaps you back with a large trout. -=MB=-

Cheers mate, I was hoping that they have secretely been working on the multi-gpu release and have included it in this version. :wink:

As was I. Once I read the original post, however, I realized they were concentrating on the multi-core affinity rather than multiple GPU cards.

Core 1.07 is active on, no problems installing :
Vista 64 / 8800M GTX 1 of 2 boards
XP 32 / 8700M GT 1 of 2 boards
Vista 32 / 9800GTX

Before starting to experiment with te environment variables I would like to know,

>> how to activate the 2nd boards ?

Thus if we are not having PPD slowdowns and have just a dual-core mobo, and are happy with V.1.06, we can just stick with V.1.06 and not make this "upgrade"?

Thanks!

You probably want to run it anyway, as those changes will invariably be incorporated into any future release. If you don't want to use any of the new options, they said it defaults to the way things worked before.

(Hands Harald a haddock to use on Friedrim) :)

Did I mention it also fixes a bunch of those random mid-WU EUEs?
