Questions and comments regarding the GPU2 client running on a nVidia GPU that supports CUDA.

6.12 Beta 11 - NVIDIA

Postby uncle_fungus » Wed Jul 16, 2008 11:38 pm

Changes:

6.12 beta 9
  • Fixed binary version information
  • (CPU) XYZ filename passed to viewer with quotes
  • (CPU) Installer directory issue
  • Fixed core launch directory which caused auto-upgrades to fail if core was present in "Program Files"
  • Added additional advanced config options to console clients
  • Added MachineID selector in systray gui

6.12 beta 10
  • Client shows PRCG on results upload
  • Passkey now validated for hex content
  • (CPU) Moved service installation to advanced config to prevent inadvertant use
  • Log date and time when automatically attempting to upload results.
  • Correctly restore system tray icon when shell (explorer.exe) crashes
  • Significantly improved queueinfo
  • Multiple copies of the client can no longer be started with the same "start in" dir
  • Automatically increase packet limit to max size for results that are too large
  • Failed uploads will be attempted again using alternative upload port (8080->80 and 80->8080)

6.12 beta 11
  • Fixed Clone->Gen swap on upload PRCG notice
  • Removed spurious "benchmarking..." messages
  • Fixed upload crash-bug from beta 10
  • Added extra_parms support to console clients
  • Fixed queueinfo crash-bug from beta 10

This will NOT fix problems related to cores of course, like the viewer problems, nVidia desktop lag/lockups, etc.

Installation notes: You must uninstall the previous version before installing this version, however this should be the last time this is necessary.

Service installation is not in full working order yet, so your mileage may vary.

Downloaded XP console.
Unpacked archive and renamed folder to f@h-gpu1, moved to Program Files, unpacked again and renamed to f@h-gpu2, moved that one too to Program Files.
Moved all files, I mean everything, including work folder, config, log and core files, from Documents and Settings/%myname%/Application data/folding@home-gpu to f@h-gpu1. Then all files from Documents and Settings/%myname%/Application data/folding@home-gpu2 to f@h-gpu2.
Everything is working great. WUs were continued where left.
Just a little guide from me.
Whish You all happy folding. :D

Vista Users note, doing the above will not work if UAC is turnd on (pick c:\folding\GPU1 GPU2 and so on)

not an good start, why does it say my video card not supported on cards 1-3 but works on the first one does work (beta 8 worked fine)

this is useing the systray on XP 32 1x9800GX2 and 2x8800GTX cards in the same PC (19K ppd)

allso keeps on complaneing about the Passkey needing to be 32 long when there is 32 letters and numbers in there

i go back to older beta untill this is fixed

I just used the above and all 3 clients restarted using the new client perfectly. I'm on Vista 64bit. 2x8800gt Akimbo + 1x8800GS.

Cosmetic bug (low priority):

Systray client -- Advanced tab

"Core Network Address (Advanced)" label extends into the text box's beveled border just to the right of the label thereby blocking out part of the beveling. This is on the "Windows Classic" theme on Win XP (if that actually makes a difference).

I am testing the XP console version.
The console version is very welcome BTW :)

The service install saves me a bit of time, no need to roll my own with srvany.
Tested out OK, stopped and started a few times and the clients didn't come to any harm

Less fluff ideal for 'pharmers'
No messing with seperate user and program directories.

I used the extra parameters to add flags.
Accepted the -gpu x parameters when run from the command line or double clicking the exe.
However the extra parameters in the config file were ignored when launched as a service.
It was still necessary to edit the imagepath in the registry to add flags.

If a setting could be added to the config for core affinity that would put the cherry on the top.
Not the dont lock cores setting, i mean make the client run on core x unconditionally.

I use XP and allow 1 core per GPU, at present i have to use the NV_FAH_CPU AFFINITY variable.
This works OK but it does mean that i have to create extra users to run the GPU clients to make sure they all run on different cores.
Have to log in once as that user just to set the NV variable then that user is only used as a log on for the service or a run as.

Yes, see this note about service installation, it's not completely supported in v6 yet.

Betas 9 and 10 were not open, so you haven't missed anything.

The client has absolutely nothing to do with your current production as that is determined solely by the cores, which are not explicitly linked to any particular client version.

I downloaded the console version in XP and consolidated the directorys; one for each core. I'm running 9800 GX2 in this box so I am trying to get both cores folding. To assign a project to each core I simply edited the config files and assigned different machine id's. I don't think I'm getting the results I want. I have one core at 76 degrees and the other at 66 indicating that one core is doing all the work for both.

What is the proper way to assign cores in this environment? Do I need to put a flag on the .exe file? Previously I was at about 88 seconds per step, not I'm in excess of 3 minutes per step.

Thanks,

I forgot to mention that I don't have a 2nd monitor yet so I may not have an active #2 gpu. I'll fix that tonight. So is it better to have one gpu working two instances or two gpu's working an instance each? I'm getting about 2:58 seconds per frame, for each unit on one gpu.

Thanks,

From my experiences, if you run 2 clients on 1 GPU, each client does a little less than half the PPD, so you actually do less work than just using 1 client and 1 GPU. 2x Clients on 2x GPUs nets about 2x the work, so 1 clients per GPU is the way to go unless something drastic has changed in the last few days.

Is beta11 supposed to be using the 1.07 core now, or are we still using 1.06?

I only ask because I followed the instructions to uninstall the beta8 GPU2 client, before installing the beta11 client. The logfile shows that I am still using the 1.06 core. This is XP SP3.

Thanks for the update guys! :)

OLD
the 1.07 core still does not auto download yet you need to get if from the this forum (1.07 thread)

guess thay removed it from the server, is there an other place where it comes from now or going to have to be rapid share it

1.06 core now is 1.07 (thay just renamed the ver so if you have 1.06 and muti GPU is working you have the New renamed 1.06 core)
