9800GTX and Q9300

Postby Gilgamesh » Fri Aug 01, 2008 10:58 pm

Hi, my system is as follow:

MB ASUS striker II Extreme 2GB RAM DDR3 Corsair
Video Gygabyte 9800 GTX 512MB (stock speed but shader at 1800)
CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5GhZ @3.1Ghz
Both the Mainboard chipset and the CPU are water cooled.
PSU 320W

Now I installed folding GPU, but when folding run the PC is slow, only one of the 4 core are used but still even doing normal tasks like browsing internet is slow I mean the graphic interface, drag a window across the screen all this. it's like the video is taking all the resources even if i place it at 60% is a bit better but still only a bit better.

Is that normal for everyone due to the beta or I have a problem?

I Use XP 32 Pro SP3

This is a know bug with NV client under XP ... (I call it 2D slowdowns bug)

What drivers do you use ?

My usual advice here is to pause the client when you need to use an application that is really unusable (for example, watching a movie or playing a 3D game), and to resume work when you're done.

i find this 2d lag very tricky. its effects vary alot among boxes (even between dualcores and quadcores themselves). What helps me is setting affinities, but it all seems a bit nonlogical (to me atleast). when im watching a movie, i need to set the player's core affinity to the same core which runs the gpu core, if i set the affinity to some other core, everything become almost completely jammed. But when i browse web, i need to set the browser's core affinity to the other core, which doesnt run the gpu fahcore. when i do otherwise, well, it doesnt lag as much as with the video but it lags noticeably more. I still dont get it how the gpu2 client could go out of beta before this issue being resolved.

Thank you to clarify that is not just my problem, so now at least I know that is not a driver problem. I use the 177.35 drivers btw.

I noticed that the core usage graph is not constant but is made of spikes from 0% to xx% every couple second or so, like a square wave sound graphic plot just to give an idea.

I have read that the GPU version was not supposed to use the CPU cores more than a very small %.
