Anyone using a ga-ma78gm-s2h with an 8800 GS?

Postby SKeptical_Thinker » Tue Aug 05, 2008 12:04 am

Is anyone using the combination in the subject line? The 8800 GS card has dropped in price and is subject to a big rebate. I've seen net prices down as low as $70+SH. I have a couple of questions before I buy one. Is a BE-2350 at 2.8GHz running XP SP-3 capable of maxing out this card? Can I continue to use the IGP for my monitor and HDMI playback with the 8800 GS installed?

I'm pretty sure that my power supply will hold up an 8800 GS and its output would nearly triple my PPD.

I did that, used a Phenom 9600, 3 cores running the SMP 5.91 client, 1 core running the 8800 GT I had. Was getting about 6200 PPD with the dog-slow 2665 SMP WUs. 52 - 5300 GPU, 900-1000 off the CPU. The card was OC'd a little, but ran cool enough. Then the card blew up.

I didn't use the built-in 3200 ATI deal, the board turned it off when I installed the 8800, I didn't care so I didn't run down the deal on whether it could be configged to work.

I found the Gigabyte 8800GT at newegg for 100 with 30 MIR. It was a 256MB card but ran the good numbers no sweat. Deal is not there anymore, I just ordered another from newegg 129 - 20MIR. Where did you see a 100 - 70 deal? Do tell....

I can't see why it wouldn't max out the card.

Some Nvidia cards come with HDMI though some dont.
Machine 1: 8800GT - 5000PPD Average
Machine 1: SMP Client - 1500PPD
Machine 2: 800MHz AMD Sempron - Very low PPD xD

I see that deal at the egg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130332. That card is a GS but is listed as 96 stream processors instead of 112 or 128. Also clocked slow at 550/1600 but Rivatuner will fix that. I also see that it has a 192Mbit memory interface instead of the usual 256Mbit, don't know what that will cost you in terms of performance.

The deal I was referring to was this one:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3680417&Sku=E145-8844&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=TBBTkwCjCVyBpAgf%20mwzygtCjCVRqCjCVRq

With shipping and handling, it's still a couple dollars cheaper than at the egg.

That card doesn't have HDMI. Unless I can use both at the same time I'll have to pass.

In the FWIW department, newegg has an 8800 gs for sale at $110 with a $30 mail in rebate and $16 promo code:

http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/AUG-0-2008/Promo080508in/index-landing.html?nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL080508&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL080508-_-graphic+from+txt-_-NA-_-NA

Free shipping so for $64 net up front cost you can get ~5000 PPD. I ordered one. I'll figure out the HDMI issue later.
