55xx WU or 1.09 core: BSODs on 177.35 on G80

This only happened after I got the forced 1.09 core update. 8800GTS 320M at 621/1566/918. Before 1.09 it had folded 200 work units without issue.

End of log corresponds to BSOD.

I can speculate that the problem is caused by either the new 55xx WUs, or the new 1.09 core, which are the changed variables.

You can suspect the driver version of your nvidia more I guess

I updated to 177.79 and it didn't do anything for stability. The monitor blinks for a second when the shenanigans begin, resulting in a "gromacs cannot continue"... then all hell breaks loose, as the display driver proceeds to freeze the system sporadically. During this time, the FAH client downloads another WU and begins to process it, which combined with the already unstable display driver, causes a THREAD_STUCK_IN_DRIVER BSOD.

On the other hand, I think overclocking might have something to do with it, since it seems more stable (ie. gets more % before failure) at lower clock speeds. That doesn't explain why I could hit these clocks with the 1.08/5[0,2]xx WUs without error, though.

Perhaps 1.08 didn't check for errors as carefully as 1.09. In either case, the BSOD is a hardware and/or dirver issue so overclocking is a good guess.

did you update completely (read uninstall verry thouroughly ?)

install rivatuner 2.09 , it tell's what systemdrivers are loaded for the GPU card ...

Problem somewhat resolved: it's due to overclocking. Four WUs completed at stock.

(speculation) I think it's very likely that codysluder has the right idea: my 8800GTS 320M was never stable at 1566MHz. As 1.09 catches more errors than 1.08, I get the UNSTABLE_MACHINE. Also, 1.09 resets the GPU when it detects errors, which causes the BSODs. (end speculation)

In order to test this, I need a copy of a 50xx or 52xx WU and the 1.08 core. I suspect that it will actually "work" again, producing a results file without issue, but the results file will probably have bad science. Any idea how I can get these now?

I think it is the combination of the new 1.09 core and the new 55xx WU. Prior to the new core I never had any early teminations of WU, but since I have had the new core up and running from the weekend I had three; and most of them were definitely 55xx WU. (Sorry, have no logs to show but there was at least one 5506 early termination from memory).

V 1.08 may have been producing some bad science, but that's an assumption (and one that I'm willing to accept). If it's true, then being able to find 1.08 and a 5xxx WU isn't something that should be tested.

In fact, I serously doubt that you could test it. I suspect that when you start a 5xxx WU, if it finds a core version less than 1.09, it forces the download of the latest version.

In fact, I serously doubt that you could test it. I suspect that when you start a 5xxx WU, if it finds a core version less than 1.09, it forces the download of the latest version.

I was hoping that someone might have a previously-submitted (ie. no science credit and therefore no 'bad science' from my card) 50xx/52xx WU and the old 1.08 core so I could presumably try to see if my card BSODs with old settings--this would bypass the "new core required" problem as well. I'm concerned that if my card can't complete a 50xx/52xx WU with v1.08 anymore, it could actually be the beginning of my card biting the dust.

Also, I noticed my OC was higher than most G80 OCs, and I'm using the stock cooler, so it's rather likely that it isn't really stable at 1566 (maybe 1512 and very likely 1458). I'll try to run at those speeds tonight to see where I can clock to.

As you say, it's probably the overclock due to the stock cooler.

My 8800GT 640 is oc'd to 680/1710/950 with watercooling and with these 55xx WUs and v1.09 my ppd has jumped from 4900 to 5300.

It might be worth getting some better cooling on that card (cheaper than getting a new card)!

Yeah, I noticed that FahMon reported 5300+ PPD on some of the new 55xx WU when I used to get 5100+ PPD.

I thought 60c was a pretty reasonable temp for the G80 running full bore at 1566MHz... is it actually too hot?

My 8800GT is pulling about 65 degrees, so I think you are ok. :-)
