Updated to new GPU client 6.20 and have some questions ???

Postby Fins » Tue Aug 05, 2008 7:14 pm

Just today I did the update on my pc at work everything updated perfectly and is back folding now
I went into the FAHlog folder to check things to make sure that it picked up a brand new work unit after the update which it did fine .The one thing that I noticed was had some updates that I never seen before after an update because it was my first time doing this .

Can someone explain what this means ??
[15:20:07] Unit 1's deadline (August 5 12:52) has passed.
[15:20:11] Unit 3's deadline (August 4 20:38) has passed.
[15:20:15] Unit 6's deadline (August 5 04:31) has passed.
[15:20:19] Unit 7's deadline (August 4 07:36) has passed.

Thanks in advance

Looks like you had some old WUs in there that never got sent in for some reason and after the update it found them...

What has happened is that 4 WU's couldn't be uploaded and were kept in the queue. By the time they could be uploaded they had passed their deadlines.

Thanks for the replies :D

One thing though if they were pass their deadlines does this mean no credit is recieved ?? The FAHlog says that they passed though so shouldn't this mean there should be credit for the WU's ???

At work, my smp boxes will not complete uploads 75% of the time and will retry a lot. Despite this fact, I received credit for every unit I tried to upload so you would still have a chance those units is received and credited. Another possible thing is that when it's uploaded correctly, the client was unable to update the queue so it remained there.

A deadline is a deadline. If you miss it you will get no credit. The WU will have already been assigned to someone else to finish. If you can't upload it on time, it no longer has any scientific value.

In fact, there have been a number of suggestions about giving some kind of bonus for WUs that are returned much earlier than the deadline. A significant part of FAH's work must be done serially, so any delays are bad for the project, including delays that are still within the deadline.

The high-performance clients (GPU and SMP) have short deadlines. If the speed of your hardware combined with your pattern of computer use mean that you cannot meet the deadlines, you should switch to the standard CPU client which has MUCH longer deadlines.

The client is supposed to discard anything that's still in queue after the deadline. Apparently there was a bug in the old client that didn't do that properly but it has now been fixed.
