Unstable machine Multiple GPU issue

Questions and comments regarding the GPU2 client running on a nVidia GPU that supports CUDA.

Unstable machine Multiple GPU issue

Postby two00lbwaster » Tue Aug 05, 2008 8:29 pm

Right let's start with the machine:

    MSI P35 Platinum
    E2140@2.66GHz(333FSB) 1.375V
    2GB Patriot LL PC6400 4-4-4-12-2T
    40GB WD HDD
    2xPNY 8800GT 256MB
    480W(2x18A 12V) PSU
    Win XP64 SP2
    nVIDIA 177.35 x64 CUDA drivers
Latest drivers for Motherboard from MSI site
    Fahmon
    Avast! AV free
    2xGPU2 client(v6.22)

Okay, now following the xcpu guide as provided in a previous post I set up the GPU2 F@H client twice.
The way I understand that guide is that you set up a client and then copy it giving it a new folder name and then sorting out the gpu flag on two separate shortcuts of the folding@home.exe from each of your folders. I also copied the app data folder and renamed that and made sure the shortcuts pointed to their respective folders.

Now, only one client will ever work at a time, with the other returning UNSTABLE_MACHINE errors as below:
Code: Select all

So, any handy hints as to what I'm missing here? I just get one GPU sitting idle because I get this issue that I can't resolve.

It would be more helpful to include a link to that previous post.

Anyway, the last time I looked a the multiple GPU setup instructions at Stanford, you only needed one executable directory, but two application directories. Call the one executable from 2 different shortcuts, and then point each to their separate Start In (application) directories. Naturally, each shortcut will include the appropriate -gpu x flag.

I suppose you could make two executable directories and 2 application directories with 2 shortcuts, and put the -gpu x switch in the Additional Params setting, but don't know if that works or not.

Please read the thread in this forum called FAQ: Multiple GPU Setup for more info.

That's how I'm set up. Solid as a rock so far.

What is the Machine ID of your second client?

Starting with version 6.20 of the client, Windows XP has the monitor requirement for the second card. If you haven't extended the desktop to the second card, one of the symptoms is you will get the "Unstable_Machine" aborts.

7im has it correct. You do not need a duplicate of the executable folder - which should be in your "C:\Program Files (x86)\" folder. What you need a duplicate of is the folder where the working files are located - on my Vista x64 computer this is C:\Users\(my user name)\AppData\Roaming. XP x64 should be something similar except under C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\...

You can make the Machine ID (MID) anything from 1 - 16, just make sure that no two clients (any client, not just GPU2 clients) are using the same MID on that computer. The GPU2 client defaults to a MID of 2 because they assumed you already have a "normal" client using MID 1.
