Not enough SMP work to do right now

Postby wyzckcr » Sat Apr 17, 2010 4:37 pm

Don't know if this is part of the same problem as it just started 3-4 days ago or a bad server. SMP was working fine until this started. Did download 1 WU on the 16th but that has been it. Tried big/normal/small and advmethods flags on and off reloaded system and even did a full partition restore from 3 weeks ago with no change so I assume it's on your end. Just shortended attempts to 3 from the 42 or so that had been listed on the log file.

No, it's not the same problem, so I've split your question into a separate topic.

Welcome to foldingforum.org, wyzckcr.

FAH has been pretty much out of work to be done for quite a few days now. This is not the usual situation, but it does happen. By policy, FAH does not distribute work unless the completion of that work is scientifically important. New projects are on their way, but there is quite a bit of preliminary work to be done before new projects can start distributing WUs.

We have noticed very low incidences of work units being assigned to our FreeBSD installed machines, since about mid march 2010. Two otherwise idle FreeBSD machines have been migrated to Linux and are folding again.

FreeBSD machines are treated as Linux by the assignment servers. There should be no difference in WU availability between a FreeBSD system and a Linux system.

Yes, there is a shortage of A1/A2 WU's. However, there isn't a particular shortage of A3 WU's. If you want them, try adding the -advmethods parameter to your Linux SMP clients, That may not work for older clients, so you may need to upgrade the client to the current version depending upon how old your client installs are.

My guess is that your FreeBSD machines had older clients and the migration to Linux forced an upgrade to a more recent folding client version.

That actually works quite well.
