Hi
I was using a ram optimizer , 'Total pc care'.
After some ours of folding, it total losses control over the ram tables.
Even my browser vent down, with some fancy colors.
The troubles starts after a cpu change from 4 to 6 core.
And a reboot was necessary, to get control over the machine again.?
others that have trouble with optimizers?

What does this "ram optimizer" actually do?

Memory management in Win NT, 2000, Vista, and 7 has been quite good. I don't know why you need to use more RAM to "optimize" it...

On a Win3 system with 16K or even 32K, memory optimizers could successfully recover some fragmented bytes here and there and collect them into a single block (probably adding them to a 3.9K block of ram to make a 4K block) that was big enough to allocate to a new program that wouldn't be able to run otherwise. Nobody has been talking about memory optimizers for many years, now. There are still times when defragmenting a hard-disk can still be of value, but only occasionally and only on media which can benefit from the overhead of doing the extra processing.

memory optimizing did still work :D special on the home edition of windows. :D
But I am using a am2+ board and a 1100T cpu, when the 965 cpu was in the board, everything was OK. But i have to order some 1066mhz ram instead of the 800mhz now mounted. So I have stock speed, raised the voltage to the ram, removed the optimizer.(not only ram optimizer, but system optimizer) it seams to be stable now. I will try again when the new ram arrives. :?

Yes, Win3 had BAD memory management, but WFWG 3.11 improved it a bit...

There were some GREAT memory managers for the limited Extended/Expanded memory we had back then. QEMM from Quarterdeck Software was likely the best, and their Desqview time-slicing app was fantastic! I remember running Win3 at home inside a Desqview window while running a BBS in DOS in another one and other DOS programs in a 3rd one...

While QEMM still helped Win95, I haven't used add-on memory managers since migrating to NT4 and Win2K.

With the new ram, the system seems to be stable again. :D
So it is not the optimizer -).
I have been told, that one of the major differences between home and pro edition, is the memory optimizer.
It was just the 1100T, pressing the ram to the limits -).:shock:

I don't know if there's a difference in OS memory management between home and pro editions, but most 3rd party memory "optimizers" are pretty much just snake oil. The "optimizer" app occasionally allocates a huge chunk of (virtual) memory, then proceeds to fill that memory. This forces the OS to page out other apps from RAM to the pagefile on your HD. After filling the chunk, the "optimizer" simply deallocates the chunk, hopefully leaving you with more free physical RAM, at least for a while. This usually purges most of your filesystem cache from RAM, too, which isn't necessarily what you'd want to happen... :twisted:

Nowadays, there's only two scenarios where I'd expect some marginal benefits from such "optimization". One is if you absolutely have to run buggy applications with "memory leaks" for extended periods. That is, an application which allocates memory for some task, uses it but neglects to deallocate when the task is done. Once the tasks restarts, more memory gets allocated. Even then, you'd eventually run out of pagefile / HD space. The OS itself is smart enough to reclaim all of the allocated memory when you shut down the application (process).

Second one is, I've noticed that my Win7 x64 Ultimate hogs quite a lot of physical memory for its own purposes in some use cases, and deallocates only when something else requires lots of memory. The OS does that to optimize your user experience, but if you perceive that things run smoother with a 3rd party optimizer than the built-in OS optimizations, go ahead. On a modern OS, such use cases should be very rare, and the two optimizers are in conflict anyway.

To try and prove the point, I wrote my very own dead simple CLI "memory optimizer" app using Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition. Punch in an appropriate amount of memory to allocate, and it seems to work just as well (or poorly) as any other memory optimizer I've tried and then promptly uninstalled. :lol:

I normally use gcc_avr so -) :(
But the way the machine failed, just indicated trouble with the device driver and the ram alloc table. 8-)
But it seems to be hardware malfunction. :twisted:

O-ou, better write a disclaimer right now, before someone gets the wrong impression. :shock:
Here goes... the code in my previous post is just an app I put together really quickly to test my theory regarding memory optimizers. It isn't some nice and polished user friendly app like "real" memory optimizers are. Anyway, I'm licensing it under WTFPL. :lol:

Although the validity of the WTFPL has not been tested in courts, it is widely accepted as a valid license. Every major Linux distribution (Debian, Red Hat, Gentoo, SuSE, Mandrake, etc.) ships software licensed under the WTFPL, version 1 or 2. Bradley Kuhn (executive director of the Free Software Foundation) was quoted saying that the FSF’s folks agree the WTFPL is a valid free software license.

No comment, I don't know the answer.
But I found the hardware limit, in this constellation.
So it will just get to work, until i have seen the new bulldozer chip. and its ppd.
But this machine is NOT folding only :)

I have located the error, to the pcie bus. After the hd5770 is on stock speed again, and the the 1100T is only OC with the multiplier, the comp is now stable again. (17.5)
Just a special way to go down, it did NOT FREEZE , but there was alot of early end units from the folding program. And if I was starting ASRock OC Tuner there comes allot of error from the system. :shock: 8-)

Hi k_madsen,

Instant EUEs like this on 101xx Projects have been reported before.

This bit from your logfile:

Mapping NT from 5 to 5

would seem to indicate the client is running with -smp 5, which will cause these projects to fail.


At this time the only apparent solution is using even values for -smp x, ie 4 or 6 :(
