Server problem, or client problem?

Postby WacoJohn » Tue Jan 22, 2013 8:51 pm

Have 3 computers in the house which are folding 24/7 ... chugging along day after day. This morning, I noticed one of them is saying Attempting to get work packet. Never saw this before .. so ignored it for some time ... then looked again and still says same thing. Went to another machine .. it says same thing. Went to 3rd machine and it is processing.

The machines are:
XP SP3 ... working fine .. apparently.
W7 STARTER 32-bit Intel Atom processor (Aspire Netbook) .. not processing log similar to LINUX machine log.
Linux .... on old Windows ME machine Celeron processor, 512MB .. the one the log came from, .. not processing.

Here is the log for Linux machine:

Kinda looks like a server issue ... but what puzzles me is the XP machine which is folding just fine.

Not an expert at all this, .. but since this has never happened before, thought I would ask about it. Thank you in advance.

My guess is that the servers are running out of work for uni-processors with less than 512MB RAM.

That would explain it, ... the XP has 4GB and folding, W7 Starter 1GB and the Linux box 512MB. The only one getting work is the 4GB machine. It is DUAL CORE AMD Turion, but running XP 32-BIT.

We seem to have two additional threads running on this same topic that maybe should be consolidated:

171.67.108.53 - Unable to get new work assignment

Cannot download WU

Other than noting that the work server that has been serving the Core 78 work units for a very long time is both showing a status of DOWN and also is showing no available work units, we don't have any definitive info on what's up.

I have one 2005 Toshiba M45-S551 laptop - Pent M 740 CPU @ 1.73 GHz with 2 GBytes of RAM running WinXP SP3-32 FAH v7.2.9 that gets only Core78 work units. If there is no other work for this, then I want to turn it off and save the power.

This CPU should be able to handle the Core a4 Uniprocessor work units as [edit] productively as one thread of my Pentium 4/HT 3.2 GHz desktop which is running on a UNIPROCESSOR core under v7, but the Pentium M laptop never gets any such assignments. For a long while, both the Pent 4 HT and the Pentium M were getting the same kind of Core 78 work units, and typically the old laptop did better on them than the Pent 4 (of course, the main use of the Pent 4 HT desktop was then and is now to host a GPU).

A CPU that has two or more cores (including hyper threaded technology) should be getting FahCore_a4 assignments except maybe those that only have 512K of RAM. Is anybody with 2+ cores having problems?

Maybe that's what is happening. I have the Pentium 4 / HT running only a UNIPROCESSOR core, not an SMP core. But it is getting the a4 work units while the Pentium M Uniprocessor without HT is not.

BTW, both the the Pentium 4/HT 3.2 GHz and the Pentium M 740 CPUs have the identical MMX and SSE (1,2) instruction sets. And, while the laptop Pentium M has a lower clock speed (1.729 GHz vs 3.2 GHz), the laptop processor actually has more CPU L1 and L2 cache. I've also listed the Intel ARK comparisons for the two processors.

Pentium M: L1 Data 32 KB (8 way); L1 Inst 32 KB (8 way); L2 2048 KB (8 way)
Pentium 4 HT/3.2: L1 data 8 Kb (4 way); Trace Cache 12 kμops (8 way); L2 512 KB (8 way)

FYI - I had to look up the kμops term I wasn't familiar with:
The acronym kμops stands for "Thousand Micro-Operations" K being thousand. It's a measurement of how many operations the processor can cache. Instead of using size in bytes, or kilo-bytes, which is misleading, due to the different size of instructions on each different cpu. So a 12 kμops cpu can cache up to 12,000 micro-operations

Keeping in mind how ignorant I am, should I assume this is a temporary server problem or have these two machines seen their last folding day?

I'm confident that this is a server problem which hopefully will be remedied soon.

OK, .. thank you. Glad to know FAH still wants my contribution.

Almost without exception, FAH always wants everyone's contributions.

See this quote from this morning from Dr. Pande - FAH is working on the issue.

VijayPande wrote:We are looking into what's going on. Several FAH project/server managers have added core78 WUs, so it's not clear right now why donors aren't getting them. We're continuing to look into this.

thank you all., for all the reassurance. Dummy that I am, .. when this started happening, .. I 'googled' some things that gave links to Stanford (etc) ... and to my surprise, more than a few of Stanford and FAH sites were down .. HTTP 500.

Caused me to ponder whether Stanford got somehow hacked.

WAAAH. Still not folding. Seems pretty odd, .. FAH would let such a thing go unfixed for so long.

John, I am only able to run one machine at this time. Mine has been down for two days. Hopefully the group will have the servers up and running shortly. This has happened before.

HOKAY .. I'll stop whining. I never witnessed this before .. so thought maybe they were no longer accepting 'low end' processing. Thank you .. very much . for your comment.
