Windows 6.20 CPU Client release notes

Postby uncle_fungus » Fri Aug 01, 2008 7:39 pm

No more beta status, no more expiry date.

If you are updating an existing (pre 6.20) service with this new client, you must remove the existing service first as the new service management code is incompatible with previous versions.

The systray installer does not install a startup shortcut by default.

Official changelog:

  • Added Forums to systray menu.
  • Support cpu affinity by default, this is related to an nVidia problem
    and awaits core-side changes.
  • Add additional parameters field in advanced preferences - no more
    shortcut editing!!!
  • UNSTABLE_MACHINE count reset after a correctly finished WU, for
    long-running systems
  • Open configuration dialog box when invalid settings detected
  • Fixed core launch directory which caused auto-upgrades to fail if core
    was present in "Program Files"
  • Added additional advanced config options to console clients
  • Added MachineID selector in systray gui
  • Client shows PRCG on results upload
  • Passkey now validated for hex content
  • Moved service installation to advanced config to prevent inadvertant use
  • Log date and time when automatically attempting to upload results.
  • Correctly restore system tray icon when shell (explorer.exe) crashes
  • Significantly improved queueinfo
  • Multiple copies of the client can no longer be started with the same
    "start in" dir
  • Automatically increase packet limit to max size for results that are
    too large
  • Failed uploads will be attempted again using alternative upload port
    (8080->80 and 80->8080)
  • Removed spurious "benchmarking..." messages
  • Added extra_parms support to console clients
  • Extra parameters are validated at configuration and launch time.
    Invalid settings will force reconfiguration
  • Fixed and updated service installation to allow use of working directories
  • Added ATI FireStream 9170 detection
  • Compressed Vista icon to reduce size of executable (saves ~ 200kb)
  • Updated MyFolding.html to match folding.stanford.edu style

Why take out the information of the unit to us, like seconds to do a frame and estimated time remaining. This may affect the speed, but was really useful.

I do prefer "ball and stick", but image only showing the area of the elctron cloud I can live with.

So this the Graphical version? I was looking through the description and both sound like more of the 5.04 text style and I wasn't sure which one to upgrade from 5.03 too.

If you want graphical bits and pieces you want the systray client.

I downloaded what I believe was the first one in the list recommended by information gathered by the browser, where the second was the CLI one in a zip format.

Yeah I guess I read it so fast I missed the part where it said with viewer.

All I need to do is remove the old version with Add or Remove Programs and then download and install the new version once my current WU is done and uploaded right?

hi guys,

I downloaded and installed the 6.20 systray client with viewer, but the viewer doesn't work ?!?
Does-it work with intel graphic cards, or only with ATI/NVIDIA ?

I have an ATI board, but the viewer crashed anyway.
So I installed the console client and use Fahmon to monitor it. (like I did before)

The viewer for the GPU 6.20 version is bugged so it might be the same thing with this version. And if it is we'll just have to wait for an update to fix it. It gave me a VPU recovery error or something and tried to send it to ATI. Like it does with Microsoft OS errors.

Hi All!

Is it possible to force 6.20 Client to keep all work data in the same folder as main executable file (like "C:\Program Files\Folding@home\Folding@home-x86")? By default it puts all data to %APP_DATA%\Folding@home-x86 but according our network policy %APP_DATA% is on network server and I don't want to keep this stuff there.
May all beings be happy...

One option, run the console version instead of the Systray version if you want to keep all of the files in one location.

Hmm... Not necessary I think. What I've done:

Prepared batch file fah.cmd
Code: Select all
c:
cd \Progra~1\Foldin~1\Foldin~1
SET APPDATA=c:\Progra~1\Foldin~1\Foldin~1
start Folding@home.exe
exit

Put it (shortcut to it) into Startup Windows folder. Seems like it does work!
