99 day wu .....

Postby Lgringo » Mon Dec 31, 2007 3:49 am

i bought one of those $200 wal-mart boxes as something that i could learn how to spell "linux" on, loaded kubuntu 7.04 on it and started it on some folding. 1st 2 WU's went fine, about 100 mins or so to do a percent. however the 3rd one is taking about 24 hours to crank thru a percent. since this is a play box, i'm not going be leaving it up for 99 days at a time. did i get this methusala project by virtue of saying 'yes' to the advanced scientific cores question? something else? log entries follow.

FahCore_81.exe

Work units come in different sizes, and points, and naturally take different amounts of time to complete. P4102 is only 215 points. P1487 is worth 1741 points. Just keep folding...

Are you seeing any reference to SSE in your FAHlog.txt?

I dont know what the $200 walmart computers are, but im guessing somewhere around 1GHz. What is the exact spec?

' Extra SSE boost OK.' appears on the start of each run. The cpu is a VIA C7-D 1.5GHz. some links at:

VIA are really bad CPU for intensive calculation ... they are only designed to be power efficient, but not for intensive processing (FAH, games, ...).

If I where you, I'll let it fold without worring about it ... or I would get a real computer with a good CPU

OK, i broke down and ordered a low-ball stripped down Dell dual quad box.
http://navcompars.net/gringo/dellbox.pdf
it was $840 with tax & shipping, which works out to $105/core. about 1/2 the Via core price ... :-]
Dell fiscal year ends 4 Feb, so they tend to have good deals the last month or so, at least in the U.S.

Welcome to the folding forum, Lgringo.

You'll be much happier folding with the dell. Any quad (or duo) will be better than any VIA for FAH.

You'll have to consider whether you want to run the beta client with -smp or multiple copies of the released client (or the beta client without the -smp flag).

Lgringo, I noticed your new Dell has a Xeon proc. instead of the usual Core2. Any idea on how this will affect folding?
