NANs detected on GPU

Postby TheReaperWaits » Fri May 27, 2011 12:42 am

Hey folks I'm getting this error on my GX2... Any idea what it means...?

I have looked around and tried a few solutions:

Delete work folder
Reset client config
Run in compatibility mode

Managed to get one core going again, still having problems with the second.

I am running vista 32bit
This is on 5766, 5768 and 5765 WU's (that I have seen).. The core that is running is currently doing a 5772 (all are 353 point WU's).

It is only doing this on 57xx WU's which I have seen can have problems, every other WU will happily fold at the 1890MHz shader speed. It does this at stock clocks also.

Is there any way to stop getting these bad WUs? I doubt stanford would rather I error out and then stay idle until I can reset it again.

Managed to get both running again, picked up a 10514 and 6605 WU, which is folding no problem.

Any suggestions?

Back off the overclock a bit. Some WUs push the hardware more than others.

We can also have a Mod check that WU to see if others also errored out, or returned correctly.

Sorry to quote myself. It does this at stock also, even when I under clock it. :/

The WU Project: 5768 (Run 10, Clone 219, Gen 937) has been successfully completed by others, so there's nothing wrong with the WU, itself. Your hardware is unstable, as the message indicates.

It's impossible for us to tell whether that's because of a driver problem or because it's overheating or it is excessively overclocked or the GPU actually has a hardware fault or the power supply isn't able to supply the required power, but those are common reasons why the message is issued.

Sorry to make you quote yourself. Long day yesterday, and I didn't quite make it all the way to the end of the one longer line of text so see that. :(

Since Beruski checked the WU, and it's not bad, it wouldn't hurt to memtest your pc and memtest the GPU, etc. Eliminate possible causes, and what's left is the problem. ;)

Thanks,

I have finished running memtest... no errors... I have change the WU size to large in the hopes of avoiding those 576x's.

(A couple of other guys on the forum are having similar problems)..

So far so good, in fact I now have the shaders at 1944MHz and still chugging along nicely, I am hoping to hit 2k by the end of the weekend.

Thanks again. :)

Sorry to re-bump this, but I just got two more 576x's and get the same error, it has been folding all night at 1998Mhz Shader and now it gets another 353...

I have shut it down until this problem can be sorted or I find a solution. No point wasting electric. :(

That's your choice, but I don't think that's the best way to solve the problem.

If you give the complete PRCG information of the other WUs I can check if somebody was able to complete them, but when you generalize like saying 576x's all I can say is that lots of people are successfully completing them. I'd guess that there have been several hundreds of thousands (or maybe several millions) of WUs successfully completed for each of those projects. We have very few problem reports. It's highly likely that you have a hardware problem.

We have no way to sort out if it's a driver problem, some kind of GPU failure, an overheating problem, an overclocking problem, a problem with inadequate power, or any of a number of other possibilities, but repeated errors from the same hardware tends to be something that you need to fix, not something that FAH can do anything about. Testing VRAM does validate a portion of the GPU, but there certainly are a lot of other hardware issues that are harder to test (other than by running FAH).

As you can see they are all project 576x WUs...

Thanks for helping. :)

All of the above WUs weren't bad as they were successfully completed by other donors.

Project: 5767 (Run 4, Clone 206, Gen 532):
Your WU (P5767 R4 C206 G532) was added to the stats database on 2011-05-28 09:04:57 for 353 points of credit.

Thanks for the help, and for being patient. :)

Would the fact that I'm using vista be a cause?

I have not seen any reports suggesting that Vista would matter, but we don't have any way to tell the version of the OS that completed the WUs -- except that it wasn't Windows XP. (Well, one of those three was completed by someone with XP and someone with non-XP.)

There are several versions of drivers, too, and that's more likely to matter than whether it's Vista or Seven. Unfortunately we don't have that information either.

Figured I would update and help you guys.

I tried a bunch of different drivers which made no difference.

I then wiped vista and replaced with win 7 64bit... So far so good, it has actually managed to attempt to fold a 5765... Still folding.

Though I will note I get less PPD in win 7 than vista, its about 1.5k PPD each GPU...

Thanks. :)

I don't see why win 7 and vista would be any different for PPD... the OS just doesn't make that much difference.

I get exactly the same, and I'm running W7 x64 on a i5 2500K and a nVidia 570 GTX. My rig is not overclocked nor underclocked. Using the latest nVidia driver. 8 Gigs of RAM.

I too have tried deleting work map, reset client config, asigned a new slot, asigned new ID for the slot and so on. Still have problems.
And most of all, I don't even know what NANs are. Can somebody tell me?
