Failed upload after double unit run V6 on GTX460

Setting up my system I started another V6 client by mistake whilst another was in progress- but not actually running at that time.
That other one completed after I finished the 'rogue unit' - which also seemed to complete OK, even though I did it in steps.
However , it failed to upload the results- which are on file still.
I did change the machine identity as seen in the log as I was trying to configure clients- was this the problem with the upload?
or- does the GPU client not like parallel runs even if successful on the surface.
I'm not desperate about points- but just don't like to waste an 8 hour run if the results can be delivered somehow..
I did leave the earlier result upload from a week previous [at the front of the log] to show it had previously worked OK.
PS: I'm not sure, looking at this thread header, that this client is OK for GTX460 use but i don't want the CPU work to kick in under V7 automatically, as they've been doing -up till I switched back to V6.
It did seem to have run V6 OK till this episode, though. Server is available.

This message indicates that there was some kind of corruption in the results. You will not be able to upload it.

It's difficult to identify the cause of the corruption, but such problems seem to be more common when a WU is stopped and resumed many times -- and especially if the computer happened to be shut down without giving the filesystem the time needed to sync the various status tables.

It would appear that the WU was first run using the GPU systray client, then it continued to run but using CPU systray client and eventually back to the GPU systray client.

I'm not surprised the "Server reports problem with unit".

I think I'd forget about it and carry on.

btw In v7 under preferences you uncheck autostart to avoid starting the client right away or if you just want to avoid starting one of your v7 slots you can use the extra slot options for that slot: name=pause-on-start and value=true.

It looks like you started the WU with 6.41r2 GPU client, resumed a few time with 6.23 CPU client and finished it on 6.41r2 GPU client.
It seem to pull the correct core 15 each time. Not sure that matters when you run the same WU with different clients.

Thanks for input. I didn't see that the CPU client had got in there - I didn't run any CPU work in the period though.
The reason I switched back is that in V7 pausing the unit resulted in the unit closing down.
In V6 on the 460 card pausing seems to start a temperature oscillation that continues on restart, reduces output by ~20% and requires a system restart to clear.
V6 is still better to use for system setting up and o/c though, as it easier without the added CPU work getting in the way without flag setting.
I pause during clock changes to reduce corrupted data- also cooling trials can have bad results on output giving eue or Nans quite easily- so I use a 3rd party stress test now.
Yes, I've binned the old client , which was actually in a separate directory and that's it for now.
I'll bring the V7/CPU option back in the winter for full output on a cost benefit basis as the extra load is on top of the 180 watt o/c GTX460 added recently and going very well @ 860 [1720 shader] /1800 mem 1.050V running at 60deg/ 70% fan in a small +ve pressure case, micro board setup ambient 20- 25deg .
If the slot stop will work for all CPU's [I have 2 cores] I may try that- but I noticed on using V7 that 7% CPU resources were taken to run it.
It does tend to take charge rather too well!
It is a better start up client for new folders, though, because of this.

What version of graphic drivers are you using?

My reason for asking is that I tried the latest 301.xx drivers on my 460 and they didn't behave all that great(sluggishness & instability). I returned to 285.62 and everything worked well again. This was using v7 which I'm now using on all my folding clients. I didn't try 301.xx with v6.

I do have 301.xx running with a 480 and 560ti and both are working well so it was just the 460 that experienced problems.

270.61 drivers work best for me [ on the GT240 previously, also]. I've used this version for ages now. Even the 285.xx was not great for me.
I've tried the 301.xx drivers on both with problems- mostly with Visual basic flags cropping up on boot which I couldn't resolve.
Yes, like you B47, I've found dropping back a few versions on drivers no bad thing- and I checked most of the 'improvements' were for later cards than either of mine.
The GTX 460 is a good card, but when overclocked stresses the memory on board rather too readily- [I have the External Exhaust - EE version, btw] but this is not as great a matter as the shaders, as is well known.
I run below the 'top whack' anyway- as a few % is not worth doing the card in long term. Steady cooling and a fast fan curve is a plus, esp above 60deg GPU!

My usage of 130.xx was incorrect and I've fixed my post. It should have said 301.xx.

I've found the same problem with my 460. If the temperature gets to the mid 60's it just creates folding errors, whereas the 480 gets up around 90 and 560ti up to 80 without experiencing any problems. I manage the 460 fans using MSIafterburner to keep the temperature down.

301 -Yeah, I knew the one you meant. I've edited my post, so as not to confuse readers later on.
I use EVGA [my card] Precision X for fan and clock control -which I still can't get to start minimized for some reason, even when selected to do so.
It gives good voltage control and benching too.
I also have to force start it in Startup folder, too... there's always something ;~)
If it fails to run, or in service, I don't really want to rely on the native cooling on the card bios as it seems very slow- given my earlier commments.

I have numerous 460's from different manufacturers and each seems to have different temp characteristics. That being said, the chip itself can easily run at 98C (because I've done it for an extended time period). I would contend that if you are getting EUE's at much lower temps that it is more likely that the RAM or VRM's aren't getting proper cooling rather than the GPU itself. The other alternative is that the card has an outright HW problem like some bad RAM.

What I would do to prevent those types of issues is to lower RAM clock rates first because folding is not RAM speed sensitive. Second I would update my OC'ing software to a version that allows for under-volting and see how much you can lower the voltage before EUE's occur. It will have the effect of decreasing GPU temps but beyond that it will also decrease the temps on the VRM's (voltage regulators) and the RAM chips. Do note that lowering voltages will limit your ability to OC so there is a trade-off there when trying to maximize PPD.

When adjusting voltages, I do so in relatively small increments till I start getting video resets. I've found that lowering the voltage to the point of a problem doesn't start out with folding errors as much as video resets forcing the clock rate to ridiculously low levels. Those resets require a reboot to get the clock rates back up which is very annoying. So I then up the voltage slightly till no more intermittant clock rate drops outs.

I continuously monitor clock rate, %GPU usage, and TEMP in the system tray. I also use HFM.net to monitor PPD and since most of the projects are the same on my 460's the PPD stays very stable. If it varies, I start looking for causes.

If you want a good driver version that does a good job limiting lag try 260.99. Not even close to the newest, but definitely stable and good for limiting LAG. I've also found having dual 460 video cards helps lag significantly.

Yes, the EE version gets hit on the back end of the card where air flow is least. The forced cooling helps and I'm switching to a metal mesh up front to give dust control as the plastic mesh adds 3 deg to the card running temp.
I've seen that upgrades to VRM and Mem cooling have been done- but I don't think I'll get into the expense of that. I'm not a gamer :)
I found the 260.99 OK too- also and may go back, as I've still some desktop lag [mouse freezes] when the PSU fan runs, which suggests a driver issue still.[Could be wireless mouse problem, also]
I still use F@H Spy V2 for monitoring all clients, which is quite capable once configured -and no bad tendencies even though unsupported now.
I've tried underclock and under volts with no great value added. Decided to run just over Bios 850 stock [sold as an FTW version- but not quite getting there on the memory front!]
Once things settle down [lost a few units trialing, as per] I may return to look again later with your tips in mind, P5.

850 may be stock for your specific video card but that is an OC'ed speed. The standard for 460's is 700MHz.

At 850MHz I wouldn't expect you to be able to under-volt much at all. That speed tends to be at the top end of what a 460 will run at. I run mine at 800MHz except for the one with no fan (I broke it) and it still runs at 700MHz and I under-volt that one card over 1V to less than 9V just to maintain a temp of 85C-95C and on a hot day it can exceed 100C but then it is likely to cause video resets and EUE's at that temp.

The card was specced at 850 /4000 memory - IF an FTW, but the bios is not original or standard so I think it's been breathed on- but not badly done. [Ebay]
I can imagine a gamer not wanting memory chokes but for F@H the max of 870 core seems very fair at 1800 memory speed [3600 @DDR5].
I think what you say makes sense- but I never pushed that hard keeping to a working max of 77 deg under stress test and sticking to 65 working.
It seems for O/C the 460 is not forgiving at the break point but runs well at proven O/C once established.
From what you said, the later cards have taken this in hand in the design -as well as lower power take.

What is normal volts for this [O/C'd] card then? I think it was 1.037 when I got it [from Bios , I suppose]] but I have tried it to near max volts with no clear indication whether this was adding to performance or not. Now I run @1.050 which allows a bit of a boost -to 860 core. It will just about do 870, but seems to be getting unstable then.
The problem is the number of variables involved under testing and different units also.
Under cooler ambient it may be easier to see what's happening- so something for later.
Once I've got used to running at 860 I may well accept that as more than fair output.
