Radeon HD 6870

Postby Nachork » Wed Dec 01, 2010 2:35 am

Is there any way to run Folding on the Radeon 6870? I tried all of the GPU clients and none of them seem to work. Tried the forum search and all I found is a locked thread with a link to another thread which no longer exists, none of the guides seem to have anything about the Radeon 6000 series either.

Welcome to the F@H Forum Nachork,

Please read this -> http://en.fah-addict.net/news/news-0-30 ... elming.php

If you want to make folding more efficient, please use Environment Variables for the ATI/AMD GPU; Guide 1, Guide 2.

I Used the -forcegpu ati_r800 string in the advanced setting and it worked. when u start the client and gives you the card not supported error, DO NOT CLICK OK! instead right click on the task bar icon and select configure. go to advanced and on additional client parameters use the string and it will work. I got the same card and been folding for a couple days now.

Be careful : with 6.23 client, the right flag is -forcegpu ati_r700. -forcegpu ati_r800 is only supported by 6.4 clients.

They may work exactly the same, unless of course, FAH wants to use some feature that's supported in the R800 which isn't in the R700.

Don't worry, it will not happen with v6 clients.

The v7 client is already mandatory to use the new OpenCL core ...

I had the same problem getting the v6.41 client running on my 6870. The -forcegpu ati_r800 sovled the GPU not supported issue.
However, now the client is not folding and has the message "GPU - F@H Core download error (#x) , waiting before retry."
Can anyone help please?
BTW there is no log file I get an error "Cannot find FAHlog.txt file. Do you want to create a new file?

Thanks

COrrect me if I'm wrong, but I believe there are only three choices for -forcegpu: You have the options nvidia_g80 or ati_r600 or ati_r700. If you put in an invalid option, it's ignored.

Anybody with a HD 5000 or HD6000 really should install the V7 client from the open beta topic so you can run the OpenCL core.

I believe that the ati_r700 was for the v6.23 client

Where can I learn more about the V7 client?

V7 was the easest install for folding I can remember!
We'll see how well it runs . . .

Well that's kind of the idea. :)

Note that there are a few outstanding bugs (this page https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/F ... t/report/3 provides a complete list) so there are a few little issues with it. But at this point almost all scientifically-detrimental bugs have been taken care of, so it should roll pretty well for you. Apparently J. Coffland will be making the Project Description actually have something, and one of the bugs I'm looking forward to seeing taken care of is the one that allows the 3D Viewer to display the protein you're working on instead of just a demo. But that's little stuff. The point is, v7 is a brilliant piece of software that is just what F@h needed. If you run into any issues or need some help with it, feel free to post in the v7 forum and we'll try to answer your questions. Good luck! :)
