Stopping GPU client destroys work files

Postby dpp4me@gmail.com » Mon May 16, 2011 2:17 am

I have always right clicked the systray icon and chosen quit when I need to stop it. Never had a problem until now.
This problem started about 48 hours ago.
When I do this I get the windows message FahCore_11.exe encountered a problem and needs to close.
This is the WU that is doing it
Project: 5736 (Run 0, Clone 578, Gen 401)
Then when I restart it the work files are missing....
[18:38:00] Error: Missing work file=<>
[18:38:00]
[18:38:00] Folding@home Core Shutdown: MISSING_WORK_FILES
[18:38:04] CoreStatus = 74 (116)
[18:38:04] The core could not find the work files specified. Removing from queue
[18:38:04] Deleting current work unit & continuing...
The only thing that has changed on the machine was I got a windows update last week.
I have just started to investigate the issue and am curious if anyone else has had this problem.
I figure it has to be the update from last week or this WU
The same work unit will start over.
Card ATI 5670 Redwood 1 Gig Mem not overclocked
OS Windows XP-32bit
GPU client 6.23 -forcegpu ati_r700
Intel E6550
HP PC no overclocking options

Is FAHlog.txt still where it was before? Please post the first couple of pages.

How long did you process the WU before you decided to quit?

Were there any changes to you AntiVirus/Securty software?

Project: 5736 (Run 0, Clone 578, Gen 401) failed for one person but was successfully complete by another. Presumably the next time you restart you will download different WU.

Project: 5736 (Run 0, Clone 578, Gen 401)
Now the job started at 91% were it left off last night, but it still got the FahCore_11 encountered and error and needs to close.
This is the first time it has gotten the error and still had the work files, same WU all 3 time.
Here is the log.

Is FAHlog.txt still where it was before? Please post the first couple of pages.
This is the entire log below

How long did you process the WU before you decided to quit?
Twice up to 96% and 91%

Were there any changes to you AntiVirus/Securty software?
Yes, about 3 weeks ago I changed from Microsoft security essentials to Norton internet security 2011

I recommend that you exclude FAH's work directories from virus scans.

Is there anything in the Norton log about guaranteeing a virus?

Nothing in Quarantine, I also checked the history for Norton and I found where we started playing the game. Nothing unusual there either. This is puzzling and I can't stand mysteries.
I am going to try to run another GPU job tomorrow on both of my machines. I am going to keep a close eye on them and try to quit both jobs an get all the logging info I can.

Is verbosity command available for the GPU client and should the switch be set to 1 or 9 for the most intensive logging.
I plan on reading about this but just in case someone knows of the top of there head or the url to read about it.

Regarded the WU Project: 5736 (Run 0, Clone 578, Gen 401), it looks like you completed it:
Hi dpp4me (team 0),
Your WU (P5736 R0 C578 G401) was added to the stats database on 2011-05-16 16:05:20 for 511 points of credit.

Edit -> -verbosity 9 (including the space) is used in v6 Clients so you can use it. For more information about flags, please read this (http://fahwiki.net/index.php/How_do_I_k ... they_do%3F). If you want to know how to add the flags, then read this (http://fahwiki.net/index.php/How_do_I_a ... _client%3F).

I just upgraded from catalyst Ver 10.11 to Ver 11.5 and the problem has gone. That's odd but at least I can stop the client when the kid wants to play a game with me without loosing all the work.
I am going to wait until the virus scan kicks off then check again also I was/am running a "only 1" CPU client at the same time.
I will try to stop and restart the client again but it looks like the upgrade fixed something.

Quick update
The error appears to be caused by aticaldd.dll, it's date stamp was 11/10/2009. After the driver update the date on the file is now 4/19/2011.
The problem appears to have gone away.
