Significant Increase in CPU Running GPU FAH - Still Not Good

Postby YashBudini » Sat Feb 06, 2010 4:35 am

Intel Dual core E6400
Vista 32 Bit Business
NVidia GTX260
181.20 Drivers

I was doing fine until recently. I was running SMP and GPU. When I had only GPU running it would use 1-3% cpu and no more.

Lately I have been having suttering and lags. One SMP checkpoint that should have taken at worst 30 minutes ran for over 11 hours. I turned off SMP. When I check with Task Manager GPU is still using 40-48% of my CPU. That's almost one entire core. SMP priority is the lowest possible. GPU is just barely above that.

As you can see from the old drivers I haven't had any issues for quite some time. My XP machine is not experiencing this problem. I looked around a bit, I don't see any threads addressing this, but I may have missed something somewhere.

Added - Updated drivers decreased CPU usage but still hovering around 20-24%, kinda high, no?

Thoughts?

Thanks

install currently 196.21 drivers from http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk , your drivers are very old, the new updated 192 drivers or higher remove the CPU use when GPU folding is going on

I thought I needed CUDA drivers which are up to 190.38?

Added - installed your recommendation, cut my cpu usage in half.
CPU usage still around 20%. That's a lot. :e?:

any driver from 182 i think has CUDA support nvidia would never remove CUDA as its needed for Direct Compute/OpenCL and Physx

could just be the project your working on, when i stop SMP my fah cores get to about 6% peak but mine are 9800 cards (9800GX2) the 14 cores i think use a lot more cpu, the 260 cards is bit more power full then my card so peaking at 20% could happen if SMP is not running, i am SMP folding norm the CPU use dies off on the GPU clients when SMP is running

with WinSMP the A3 work units on an core2duo or core2Quad net Less points then A2 work units (under notfred) and the A1 units still been the worst, but yes 11hrs is bit long
