Can I run the GPU client on an NVIDIA GeForce G105M?

Postby jgaiviso » Tue Oct 05, 2010 10:12 pm

I have a few questions: Firstly as the title says, can I run the GPU client on an NVIDIA GeForce G105M?
Also, is heat likely to be a problem as this is in a laptop?
And can you run the GPU client while also running a CPU client?

I don't think it'll run, but why not just try it. Theres been alot of issues with lower end desktop cards.

Heat is machine dependant... so again, just try it.

1) Yes you can. However, I have read some reports that low-end GPUs may not be able to fold all WUs but I am not sure what your GPU is capable of.
2) Possible. Since GPU produces more heat so you might want to invest in additional cooling.
3) Yes you can. Adjust the priority (in the FAH Client) for the CPU to be idle while GPU to be low/slightly higher.

A GT120M works fine, getting 1200-1500 PPD. The temp isn't too bad with just the GPU. It helps if you leave the cover open and have the display turn off after a few minutes- more surface area to radiate heat.

If I also run a couple CPU clients @ 100%, core temps hit 70-75C. It was worse with SMP, but this thing won't make deadline on the bigger SMP WUs (T6400@2.0).

In the intervening 6 years the Core 11 Work Units that the G 105M could run have been retired. Newer GPUs could run newer Cores, like Core 15, 17, or 21. The G98M chip in the G105M card cannot run any current Core, sorry. (I am writing this on a laptop with a G 105M GPU, it worked (slowly) until 2 years ago)

The 105M is still whitelisted and can fold Core_15 projects only, at this time.

0x10de:0x06ec:2:1:G98M [GeForce G 105M]

The older pre-Fermi GPU's are only semi-supported for folding as the main projects that were assigned to them ran out about 2 years ago. A few projects that use a later folding core can run on some pre-Fermi GPU's, but they are also approaching end of life. For assignment purposes these need to be opted into and require two additional client options to be set.

Add the following options to your GPU slots:

max-packet-size set to small

client-type set to beta

While the beta flag is being used in combination with the size setting, these WU's are no longer beta. The two settings are used together to indicate to the Assignment Server (AS) that you want to process these older projects. No ETA available on when these work units will run out.
