Which GPU client for an 8800GTS?

Postby M-x » Wed Sep 07, 2011 5:50 pm

I am trying to find which GPU client (2 or 3) to run on my 8800GTS 640MB. I have heard GPU2 but other places say GPU3. I did notice some lags with GPU3 but does it make sense to use an older client?

Thanks

PPD on GPU 2 and GPU3 for NV cards is approximately the same for most WUs. IIRC, GPU2 client will prevent you from getting the new larger work units that would really bog down your system.

The 8800 GTS 640 Mo is using the old G80 chip which only supports Compute Capabilities 1.0.

I think that these chips had some troubles running the GPU3 core (Fahcore_15). I also think that latest clients have been improved to prevent assignment of WUs using the core 15 on older cards.

So you might be able to run GPU2 or GPU3 clients without any issue.

But if you have any issue with core 15, you can switch back to GPU2.

I have tried the GPU2 out for one WU and there was significant lag while using Windows 7 x64. Any way to reduce that lag?

Pause the client when you need decent desktop performance.

@HaloJones, I see you have a similar setup to mine (except one more 8800) what clients/setup do you run and what's the PPD for that system?

Make sure Windows Aero is turned on. That will help. There should be an option in the GPU client to set the core to the lowest priority. Of course pausing works, but some people have had some success by adjusting environmental variables. They're a little tricky to do, but the idea is to reduce the GPU usage by a small bit so that you can use the rest easier. Your looking for the FAH_GPU_IDLE variable. Here is a guide: http://en.fah-addict.net/articles/artic ... iables.php and I'm sure there's others out there. The variable SHOULD make the core idle a small percentage of the time so that the system doesn't lag so much. Best of luck to you.

Priority is always lowest by default, unless it was changed during setup.

If the Env Vars don't help (and they should help), you might try reducing the setting for the CPU usage slider on the GPU client to reduce the lag. It may or may not help.
