@Carnage83 for the info about making all 4 cores in both your machines work, try looking in the multi cpu and smp threads, there is also a thread just on i7 issues.

My numbers are similar with each of my 8800GTS 320's. I have the shaders maxed and the core at the lowest that riva will let me run.

I don't remember what driver version on Vista 32 but I remember each of these GPUs staying around 5k ppd when I first built the system, about a year ago. Now they do around 3600 each with a faster CPU. Originally Opteron 1212HE @ 2.60 now E4400 @ 2.93. The ppd drop happened before I swapped CPU/board though.

I have a third 8800GTS 320MB card not in use because the PSU only has 2 6 pins and I don't think that case can handle a third big card. I have an 8800GT on loan to a friend.

Could I replace these two cards with a single GPU card and get similar PPD? I had hoped a 260 or 275 would cut down on power usage, heat generation, and still stay within 1k of what I'm getting now with these two.

1 GTX 260 will use 10-20 watts less than 2 9600GSOs. I was hoping for a significant power savings, I didn't get one.

With X2 I found they aren't worth running SMP. I have a 2.8 dual core that uses 60-70 watts more than idle, the power usage of a 9600GSO, to deliver half the points. My latest PC has a 4850e, it's sole purpose is to support the GPUs. I leave it idle. It has a 12.5 multiplier which messes up the DDR2 speed, so I run it at 12 so my memory actual runs at the correct speed (400MHz/DDR2800). With that philosophy I would buy 4050e (2.1GHz) and run them at 2GHz. They're $40 at you-know-where.

PPW is all over the place - it varies a lot. You need to do research, but I find the GTX260 a good initial buy and having reasonable running costs. The fact that its out of favor with gamers is why its a good bang for the buck card. Note with EVGA only the 125X models are 55nm, the 126x models are all 65nm. All 260s that have 192 stream processors are also 65nm. Compared to 295s; almost no heat issues, far lower startup costs, smaller PSs save money as well.

You're getting lower PPD because the work units themselves are harder and longer to complete, we're all experiencing that.

That trend is likely to continue.

For a long time, the fanboys who like NVidia have been pleased that their favorite hardware gets higher PPD that corresponding ATI hardware. In their the original research paper written jointly by NV and ATI, the developers concluded that for large proteins, there was no significant difference. The apparent discrepancy has been because all the initial proteins were small and even though the current ones are bigger, they're still not really "large" We've posted similar information many, many times in an attempt to make sure that everyone knows this but I don't think it's still well-known.

Well I'm certain that the higher PPD initially helped adoption of the nVidia folding, especially since the ATI cards could fold some years before if memory serves. I'm not complaining about PPD decreasing, just noting that it was pretty distinct within about a month's time.

I have a 9800GTX+ and an 8800GTS 512MB each in my wife and my gaming systems, not folding for heat/noise reasons. Since they're both 128 shaders, would these two cards play nice if I put them both in the folding system together, removing the G80 cards? I had not initially wanted to do this because I don't see them increasing PPD by enough to warrant the move, and I would rather put cards that run cooler into there and from what I hear, the 260 (55nm) & 275 are relatively cool running for dual slot cards.

I am definitely replacing whatever cards get replaced with 55nm ones, just haven't decided yet what budget to use.

BTW, just wanted to say that I love these GTS 250s. Highly reccomended as folders. Haven't had a single issue since I've fired them up and they generally run nearly 20C cooler than my GTX260 and produce only slightly less. Very happy with them :D

CPU is in my signature. GPU is too, it's an eVGA 8800GT at stock. Im on Win7 64-bit.

PPD (according to F@HMon): 4841 currently, but I have seen it up at about 5100
E4500@2.7GHz, Giga-P35-DS3R, eVGA 8800GT 512mb, 4GB Mushkin Redline DDR2 1000

750ppd on a Nvidia Ion (Stock clocks, 1.8Ghz CPU) for p5772.

Unusable as a desktop computer due to slow response while F@H is running, but handles HTPC tasks just fine.
