Official CUDA 177.84 for XP and Vista available.

Postby LearjetMinako » Thu Aug 21, 2008 2:13 am

Seems Nvidia came out with a new CUDA driver on 7/28/08. I just installed it and seems to be working okay so far. I had problems with the 177.35 drivers screwing up Media Center. 177.84 is so far more stable for Media Center and still works for F@H-GPU.

You can get them form the official CUDA zone here : http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html ... they should work with FAH GPU on XP, Vista and Vista 64 bits on all GeForce 8, GeForce 9 and GTX boards. -- toTOW

Anyone tried the 177.89 driver yet? It is supposed to support CUDA too.

I'm running Geforce 177.89 since 14th of August, works fine.

Also i replaced cudart.dll with that from Cuda 2.0 toolkit 36 hours ago, no problem.
In general (not only for F@H) the final Cuda toolkit works very stable with G80 as opposed to previous betas.

The changelog claims:
"Performance Enhancements: Improved device->array memcpy performance"
Is that relevant for F@H?

I have been running 177.89 since a few hours after it was released. I only use my 8800GS for email, websurfing and folding. I haven't seen any changes in either stability or speed over 177.84.

Everything newer than 177.35 should support CUDA ... so it's not a surprise to see 177.84 working too ;)

edit : 177.84 is available from official source here http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html for both XP and Vista.

All is well. The 177.84 is working good and have no reported problems with F@H-GPU. Media Center on the other hand is still screwing up a little, not as much as before thou. Work around controls still work for it, just can't use the GUI when is does screw up.

Is 177.84 still the latest, and does anyone know if it overcomes the screen lag that you get with 177.41?

With Vista/64 and GTX 260 2D-downclocking to 300/100/100 did not work in 177.83, now 177.84 fixed that, nice.

Logmein actually allows me to do things now with this latest driver. I think I trashed two work units in the process of upgrading the drivers. Ho hum.

Found a probelm with the new CUDA driver. While folding@home is not affected, my NTune video card settings are. Problem that kept coming up is that the automatic fan control would switch to direct fan control (manual) when the PC is put into standby. I only caught this problem while folding and the fans kicked into emergency cooling. Checked my temps, CPU 55*C, case 40*C & 43*C, GPU 105*C ( :eo ). After I corrected the problem, it just keeps coming back. Rolled back my drivers to 177.35 CUDA and now the problem is gone.

Something that all GPU folders should check is there GPU temps.

What is the official stance on updating drivers? Should we all be updating each time these new drivers are published on the Cuda page?

There's not need to update if your current drivers are working fine ... updated drivers will be useful to those who play on their GPU (new bugfixes and optimizations built in), or those having issues with FAH (EUE or Unstable Machine on some boards ... or improvement in the "2D slowdowns" bug) ...

My recommendation, which apply to everything that you could update, is :
- don't update if everything is running fine
- update if your having troubles

You might see that I never posted "please update your drivers" ... I just posted that they were available, and will work with FAH ;) ...

I have a problem with 177.84. After installing F@H gets an error:
At present your GPU is not supported or you need a current driver.

and is not working.
GPU: GeForce 8600GT
I noticed that this driver was installed in a strange directory C:\NVIDIA\Win2K\177.84\IS. 177.35 was in C:\NVIDIA\Win2K\177.35.
What can I do with this problem?

Strange ... is it a mobile GPU :?:

Mobile chips usually need modified drivers from Guru3D or Laptopvideo2go ... :(
