GPU client makes the computer hang

Postby dimilunatic » Mon Jul 12, 2010 7:47 am

I used the instructions from this site to set up a GPU client on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. This laptop has 6gb of RAM, but running this client only makes it lag terribly. Any ideas?

Generally, laptops have low-end GPUs when compared to their desktop counterparts and are slow at processing the WU. Using a GPU in a laptop for F@H will cause a lot of heat to be generated so you may want to consider extra cooling.

You can remove the duplicate flags from your set up:
-verbosity 9 -forcegpu nvidia_g80 -forcegpu nvidia_g80 -verbosity 9

Also you can use this Nvidia specific Environment Variable:
FAH_GPU_IDLE
and set its value between 5 to 10. More info

Thanks for the answer! I already have a cooling base with two fans, where I place the laptop. The link you posted does not mention environment variables on linux systems. Does anyone have any idea how to do that? :/

I don't run the gpu client on wine, but it shouldn't be any different than running it in windows. Some people create a .bat file and use it to start fah. Something like
Code: Select all
@echo off
cd %AppData%\Folding@home-gpu
set FAH_GPU_IDLE=10
"\Program Files\Folding@home\\Folding@home-gpu\Folding@home.exe"

The range of 5 to 10 is reasonable, but technically speaking you can set the value to whatever idle percentage is required to keep the temperatures under control. If it overheats at 10 percent, you can go higher but as you might expect, the results will be that much slower.

I tried to make a script like that, but it didn't work. :/

What gpu does this laptop have (I think it's a nvidia GT 330M)? How much video memory? Also what is the cpu % that FAH is eating up?

Sorry for answering so late. I honestly didn't notice any new answers on this thread.

Yes, it is an NVIDIA GT 330 M. The configonly flag finds 1745 available MBs and the top command shows 10-13% usage of this 4-core system.

9 days later and this problem still occurs. Most frequently when I do something graphics-dependent, like opening a drop-down menu, but also causing 2-5 second system hangs from time to time.

EDIT: Problem solved! Hurray! :D I only had to disable special effects! Yay for a smoothly running laptop again.
