New NVidia hardware for Wine folding?

Postby davidcoton » Tue Dec 11, 2012 9:22 pm

Looks like my GTS250 finally bit the dust -- it still works as a video card, but running FAH on it is causing the system (Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit) to reboot almost immediately -- no reasons in the log, happened with two different WUs.

Can't get memtestG80 to run -- it complains that libcudart.so.2 is missing. (libcudart.so and libcudart.so.3 are in usr/local/cuda/lib)

Is it time to splash out on a more powerful GPU? If so, what? I'm not holding my breath for v7 native Linux GPU folding, so what extra hoops am I facing to get a new card (or even the old GTS250, worth 6K ppd) working with Wine?

Is the Christmas break long enough for me to find time to fix it :-)

I just replaced an old 9600 GSO with a GTX 560 Ti on one of my Linux rigs with no issues. The only change I had to make was to update the -forcegpu flag to nvidia_fermi instead of nvidia_g80. I also upgraded the driver to 275.43 just in case.

I would be very cautious buying a new Kepler GPU. The current support has been thoroughly tested on Fermi and Tesla but the status of Kepler support is unknown.

FahCore_15 has been updated to support Kepler (New CUDA version?) but that might require changes to the local copies of the runtime library and possibly to other parts of the 3rd party supporting code.

Your guess about native support is as good as mine.

Thanks both. Sounds like it might be worth getting a Kepler for my Windows Vista system, and moving its 550Ti to Linux.

Just to wrap this thread up, new 660Ti working well under Windows, 550Ti was working under Ubuntu/Wine but now idle as reported here: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=23365&p=233337#p233337

Return to unOfficial Linux GPU (WINE wrapper) (3rd party support)
