Linux Mint+wine+FahClient 6.41r2 UNSTABLE_MACHINE

Hi,

Linux Mint 14 (64-bit)
FAH Client version: 6.41r2
Graphics card: GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB (g92)
Driver version: 304.48-1
Wine version: 1.4.1

I followed this instruction:
viewtopic.php?f=54&t=23958

CUDA wrapper working ok.

When I start FAH Client, I'll always get this "UNSTABLE_MACHINE" error:

I have tried to decrease graphics card clocks, but this is not affected.

Is there any way to get this working properly.
I have tried also native Linux mint FAH client V7.3.6, but I have installation problem.

Try to run MemtestG80 to check your VRam . . .

MemTest done:
Final error count after 500 iterations over 256 MiB of GPU memory: 0 errors

I noticed that I had wrong NVIDIA driver version, not it is: 319.32
Same UNSTABLE_MACHINE error occurred also with this driver.

I tried to execute CUDA-Z-0.7.181 -program, but "Can't load cuda driver"- error occurred.

How did you install the driver? Apt-get?

What installation error did you get in Mint? Installation went smoothly for me in Mint 14, though the only way to get GPU folding in Linux on G80 cards is through Wine.

The first try, I used apt-get and installation was ok and I got "UNSTABLE_MACHINE" -errors every time.

After that I manually downloaded "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-319.32.run" driver from Nvidia's page.
It installed successful and now 319.32 version is in use. But same error occurred every time.

Should I uninstall drivers + toolkit + wine and install them back using this instruction again:

So I installed Nvidia driver via "Device Driver Manager", because I don't know which above packets I should installed.
"Device Driver Manager" showed only 304.48-1 nvidia-glx. So I installed it and works fine.

After that I followed yours instruction:

But again..."UNSTABLE_MACHINE" -errors occurred every time.

Aaargh...Have any ideas what might cause this?
This graphics card has worked ok (also Cuda) on Windows XP. (I haven't any Windows installed at the moment)

MemTestG80 seems to be ok (500 iterations 256MB, no errors)

I'd like to get this work.

I installed my driver with "sudo apt-get install nvidia-current" though there's also an experimental package that should work too. I don't think that's the issue. I think there may be something wrong with the symbolic links or Wine stuff.

Just as an idea, since we're both running exactly the same OS, do you think it would help if I shared my Wine directory and related files with you? I think there's something wrong with your installation but I'm not sure how to diagnose it on my end. You might try searching for that error in this section of the forum.

Please double check the .dll files are removed from the fah directory.

Yesterday I searched the error from forum. Many users had same kind of problem with g80 (8800 GTS) earlier, but the old post didn't help me.

This is checked, no dll -files on fah -directory.

From Jesse_V's instruction:

How about kernel version? Is my too old? (should be 3.5 -series)

I set up my WINE GPU folding a bit differently from Jesse's instructions, by copying the *.so files to the client directory and creating the symlinks there. Shouldn't make any difference, but maybe it's worth a try. Also, I don't use the gpu3.sh startup script, I simply launch the client with "wine Folding@home-Win32-gpu.exe -forcegpu nvidia_g80" instead. I don't remember what was my original kernel version, but 3.2 does sound a bit outdated.

Mint 14 runs the 3.5 kernel. Are you running the Debian edition (which uses the 3.2 series)?

The easiest way might be install new Linux with 3.5 kernel? or maybe some drivers updates to top of 3.2 -kernel?

I really think this is the problem. Ubuntu is downstream from Debian, and Mint inherits Ubuntu's packages and adds a set specifically for Mint. Mint isn't exactly a fork of Ubuntu. So, if you choose the Debian edition, you're bypassing Ubuntu, and thus your packages are different, and what you're running is mostly Debian. I've installed the Debian edition before, but I never installed FAH on it. The Ubuntu/Mint procedures may or may not work (here's one data point that indicates that they don't, though it doesn't exclude the possibility of flaws with my instructions or with your following of them) so may you need to look into the Debian version. art_l_j_PlanetAMD64 has one for you: viewtopic.php?f=54&t=23958#p240001 and apparently it's quite reliable on Debian systems. I haven't tried it myself, so he knows a lot more about it than I do. :)
