playing with bigav

Postby Gooders » Thu Dec 25, 2014 8:30 pm

Hi all, happy holidays and all that!

Ok so now i have 24 cores i would like to do at least one bigav unit before we lose this milestone in history.

I have read that i needed to put bigadv into the extra slot options (expert only) box that is found under configure and then cpu then edit, so its name is client-type and the value is bigadv

Is that correct? Or have i missed something?

Before everyone tells me i already know that i wont return a unit fast enough to get massive points but before this milestone goes forever i would like to get at least one WU back before the deadline.

(i have turned gpu folding off for now)

Current WU finishs in 50mins so ideally if i need to make edits now would be time to do it :)

You need two options to receive bigadv work with v7 and linux:

client-type bigadv
max-packet-size big

You could try Linux in a virtual environment ; sure loosing some performance but as your said: just to try ...e.g. VirtualBox

Not a big deal, you can start with minimal server setup of Ubuntu as BA don't need any OpenCL or X or nVidia or AMD. Just pure CPU fun.
E.g. Ubuntu 12.04LTS or CentOS 6/7 and the matching FAH package will get you quick to run. Run the installer, enter your donor ID , team and passkey, the above slot setting and start folding. Depend on timing you might not get a BA right away, but should work.
But don't expect too much power available outside the virtual box. It will pull hard on your Windows system.
Give it a try, it's virtual ... In a worst case you delete the virtual instance afterwards.
