imac 3.06 c2d UNSTABLE_MACHINE

This is a 21.5" iMac Core 2 Duo 3.06Ghz 4GB DDR3 with OS X 10.6.3 and Folding@home 6.29.3 installed. I'm using a passkey as well as the -smp -advmethods flags.

I constantly get UNSTABLE_MACHINE errors...it neve seems to complete more than a couple % of an workunit. Any ideas? The machine seems very stable otherwise, including for other CPU intensive applications...

Which version of MacOS do you have ? A3 is known to have troubles with some versions of OSX.

Oh wow, you're right: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13219&p=141288&hilit=smp+snow+leopard#p141288 .

Is there a way to force the iMac to get A2/A1 units? Can I just remove the -advmethods flag?

Hopefully there will be a fix soon.

If you remove the -advmethods flag, you shouldn't get A3 WUs .. but you're not assured to get A1 or A2 since they're going to be deprecated and that's there less and less WUs using them.

Yeah, it just sits there trying to find work when I remove the -advmethods flag. Oh well, at least it has a chance of completing a WU this way.

It's an issue thats been known for about a month now with no fix. It's certainly doing a good job killing the OS X folding team (not to mention all the other folders on other teams running OS X). Between this and needing a passkey for points (not understanding you need one to get the real points from the a3 units), folders are simply walking away from the project.

Multiple uniprocessor WU's are far better for the science than failing the majority of your SMP WU's.

Too bad there is no such thing as a uniprocessor client for intel macs. It's smp or nothing.

Not sure about OSX but in windows, if you run the SMP client without the -smp flag, it will default to UNI WUs. Maybe you can try it out and hope that it works.

There is no uniprocessor client for intel macs. The PG in their infinite wisdom, and despite much asking for it, never ported it from linux. OS X is smp only, no uniprocessor, no gpu. And when you run OS 10.6.3, you don't have any client to run at all.

This is why OS X people are walking away from the project. No options. None. We can only hope at this point that some of them will come back when someone finally gets around to fixing the problem. Some are certainly gone for good.

Running without -advmethods with the latest client will not get you a1 or a2 units either. You need to get an older version of the client for that to work, and for that, you need to know someone who hasn't upgraded yet, or happens to have a copy laying around. The latest client downloads nothing but a3's.

I have experienced exactly what you have described. I removed the -advmethods flag in an attempt to obtain A1 or A2 WUs. It didn't work. The Assignment Server continued to send A3core WUs ( which contain many problems recently, as has been discussed elsewhere... :( ) I went on to remove the -smp flag and that did not change anything. More A3core WUs were delivered, and I folded them, for better or worse.
