PPD is extremely low [No, P4 are not from SMP]

Postby theory » Wed Feb 02, 2011 3:48 am

I've been having trouble with this smp2 client ALL DAY LONG. After finally figuring out how to install it and everything, I've run into ANOTHER problem.

My ppd is about 195. But I'm pretty sure I'm running the right core and everything.

I have a dualcore pentium 4 processor @ 3.4 Ghz, It's a little old, but I was expecting a lot more PPD.

Here is my log file:

You have the correct flags and your Client has downloaded the correct FahCore_a3 and WU. So:
1) What software are you using to monitor your Client? Is it the latest version?
2) Did you manually update the Projects of your monitoring application?
3) Did you use a passkey and finished 10 FahCore_a3 WUs, maintained >=80% WU return rate with the same username/passkey combination?

1. I'm using fahmon, but not the latest version because it doesn't work for me when it tries to read my GPU2. It stays on yellow and doesn't calculate my PPD, I have no clue why, but it's happened to a few people.
2. Yes.
3.Nope, this is my first WU. When I finish 10, is that when my PPD will rise? Because it's going to take about 2 days to finish this sucker. I'll probably BARELY beat the deadline.

You appear to have it configured correctly, so something must be using significant CPU cycles other than FAH. A DC P4 ought to get close to 20:00/frame on p6062 (~ 1000 ppd).

What are you using to monitor the client? 35:24/frame is 442 ppd with the QRB bonus included. What does task manager show? Add cpu time to the task manager view to catch processes that use a lot of cpu resources intermittently.

When you say dual core Pentium, you mean a Pentium D, correct?

Also, the GPU client may be using a lot of one of the CPU cores, thus slowing down the SMP client. What kind of GPU do you have?

As PantherX started to describe, you have to complete 10 SMP WUs before the Bonus kicks in, then SMP scores much better. Also, that older FAHMON won't show you the bonus points. You'll have to upgrade, or switch to HFM for monitoring if fahmon doesn't work for both clients.

A processor, that can only just barely beat the deadline is not going to get a significant amount of bonus points regardless of qualifying for it by successfully completing 10 WU's. The whole point of the bonus is to reward fast return and the deadline is the location of no bonus points.

All I'm seeing is that it's a dual core pentium 4 processor, I don't know how to check if it's a pentium d or not, is there any way to check?

I've seen people get about 1000 PPD with dual cores, so I don't know if this one is too slow or I'm just doing something wrong.

You can use CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php).

I have an Intel Pentium Dual Core E5400 @ 3.3 and I get an average PPD of ~2500. Of course, this is almost dedicated and runs 24/7. YMMV.

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.

There are quite a variety of dual-core machines. My laptop has two real cores, but the clock rate is low enough that it gets very little bonus when running 24x7 and only baseline points if it's down for more than a short time.

Since you're not eligible for a bonus until you return 10 bonus-type WUs, you can decide whether you should be running SMP or not. (A lot depends on your answer to which GPU you're running.) Go to http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php and it will predict what your bonus will be once you're qualified.

Okay I figured it out. It's a pentium 4 550 3.4 Ghz. I've yet to figure why my PPD is so low, though. Is this not a good processor? Anyone have one and can tell me how much PPD they get?

Well, that P4 is a single core processor with hyper-threading (basically a simulated second core). The SMP client shouldn't be used with that processor because it is only a single core processor and the smp client is designed for multiple cores. The benchmark machine for folding on a single-core folding client is a 2.8GHz P4 (with SSE2 turned off). It should produce around 110 PPD. Since your processor supports SSE2 and is slightly faster it should do somewhat better but still it just is not a very capable processor compared to modern chips.

Are you freakin' serious? Well, at least everything is making sense now. Sucks that I've been thinking I'm running a dual core for these past five years, haha.

Quick question: Why is it then, that when I boot up FAH, it says that it detects two cores? Just wondering.

Because the OS says that there are 2 cores. it's the same with the i7's they have 4-6 actual cores, but the OS detects 8-12 and FAH simply uses that assessment.
That’s also a reason why i7’s can run –bigadv even though they aren’t true 8 cores.

Because FAH is relying on the OS and Windows is reporting that the simulated second core is actually a second core/processor. See: Hyper-threading

Thanks for all the help, guys! I guess it's time to update to the new i7 core, huh? I guess I'm getting a new rig soon.... 8-)
