Use SMP2 under Win7 or inside Linux VM?

Postby M-x » Sun Sep 04, 2011 5:24 am

Hello,

I have just started folding again and I have a quick question. I started looking around and I keep seeing people suggest folding inside of a Linux VM for better performance. I have VMWare Server and was wondering if I should put a 64 bit Ubuntu or similar on it to start folding with the SMP2 client. Is this true? Or should I just stick with folding on my Win7 x64?

Thanks for your help!

How long ago were these recommendations made? In the early days of the SMP client that was definitely true, but once the a3 core came out for both Windows and Linux the PPD difference went down a lot. While I haven't personally tested Windows vs. Linux on the same machine recently, 7im said recently that Linux is only marginally faster than Windows on regular-sized SMP WUs, and you can't run the bigadv WUs where there would be a noticeable difference. The VM overhead would likely negate the marginal Linux speedup, so I'd say stick with native Windows.

Ok, that's what I was thinking. You did bring up a good point, most of those recommendations were made even 2-3 years ago. So I'll stick to the native Win7 client!
