FX-8120 on Ubuntu 11.10 questions

Postby dudeami » Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:43 am

I have been folding for a bit, but the hardware I used was not the best (PS3, Intel Core 2 Duo P8600). I did take a break for a while, but have recently decided to startup with my new system. Specs are:

AMD FX-8120 8-core overclocked to 3.9Ghz (atm)
8GB DDR3 1866 RAM (G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series)
ASUS M5A97 Mobo

Question #1
Now, when I run folding@home I can expect to complete most projects pulled to be using the A3 core, and have a TPF or 3-4mins. Now, the points for most of these WU's is around 552 (project 6985 for example). This seems pretty slow to me, but I have no data to base this off.

Question #2
How are projects distributed? My linux client is getting projects it can complete relatively quickly, but my Windows PC (w/ the Core 2 Duo) is getting an A4 core project (#7600) that is getting a TPF of 5hr 42m (note this is a uniprocessor slot on v7 client). Now this seems really weird for two reasons, first being I can technically not make the deadline even running 24/7, and secondly because the 8-core seems like a much better candidate to get the job done. For those who are interested, the reason the Windows PC is running uniprocessor rather than SMP is because the GPU instance tends to use a bit of the CPU itself (Usually 80-100% of a single core). If I should run SMP instead, let me know and I'll switch it over.

Welcome to the F@H Forum dudeami,

1) Please note that all the SMP WUs now use the Bonus Points Plan (QRB). For a quick overview, please read this (viewtopic.php?f=58&t=13160). The 552 points are the base points and with a TPF of 4:00 minutes, you get a PPD of about 13.5K (http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php)

Thanks, probably should have read the stickies . Looks like I just needed to get the first 10 qualifying WU's in. I had no idea the bonus points made that much of a difference O.o.

Thanks for the quick help :)
