Problem installing FAH 6.34 w/SMP

Postby ChipInNC » Sat Mar 10, 2012 12:01 am

When I try and install the FAH client 6.34 as SMP (using either "fah.exe -smp -configonly" or "fah.exe -configonly -smp") it frequently fails and terminates, leaving a client.cfg file full of NULs.

The funny thing is if I re-run the install several times, at some point it seems to work. This seems weird and I've tried it on three machines so far, all running Windows XP (Multi-processor).

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Problem FAH 6.34 w/SMP running as a service

Postby ChipInNC » Sat Mar 10, 2012 12:08 am

So I've already said that there are issues when installing this in another thread. Once I get it installed as a service, even though I installed it using the -smp flag on the command line, the -smp flag is not used on the service command line, and I have to stop the service and run it manually using the -smp flag to get it to use all the cores of all the processors.

I'm including my client.cfg file here for reference:
---------------------------------
[settings]
username=ChipInNC
team=49813
passkey="Deleted for posting"
asknet=no
machineid=6
bigpackets=big

[http]
active=no
host=localhost
port=8080
usereg=no

[core]
addr=
---------------------------------------------

Is there a config file option for SMP, or is there an easy way to alter the command for the service?

Otherwise the service is not using all the cores and we aren't getting the throughput from our machines that we could if SMP was enabled.

Thanks!

One thread per topic PLEASE.

When you run -configonly, it asks you the following questions:
Code: Select all
User name [Anonymous]?
Team Number [0]?
Passkey []?
Ask before fetching/sending work (no/yes) [no]?
Use proxy (yes/no) [no]?
Acceptable size of work assignment and work result packets (bigger units may have large memory demands) -- 'small' is <5MB, 'normal' is <10MB, and 'big' is >10MB (small/normal/big) [big]?
Change advanced options (yes/no) [no]? y
Core Priority (idle/low) [idle]?
CPU usage requested (5-100) [100]?
Disable highly optimized assembly code (no/yes) [no]?
Pause if battery power is being used (useful for laptops) (no/yes) [no]?
Interval, in minutes, between checkpoints (3-30) [15]?
Memory, in MB, to indicate (8191 available) []?
Set -advmethods flag always, requesting new advanced  scientific cores and/or work units if available (no/yes) [no]?
Ignore any deadline information (mainly useful if system clock frequently has errors) (no/yes) [no]?
Machine ID (1-16) [1]?
Launch automatically, install as a service in this directory (yes/no) [no]?yes
The following options require you to restart the client before they take effect
Disable CPU affinity lock (no/yes) [yes]?
Additional client parameters []?-smp
IP address to bind core to (for viewer). Use space to clear []?

Note that you need to answer "yes" to "Change advanced options?" and you have to answer "-smp" to "Additional client parameters?" and you may need to answer yes or no, depending on which version of the question you see for "Launch automatically, install as a service in this directory (yes/no) [no]?"

You cannot configure the client when it is also already running as a service.

2 instances running in the same location will conflict and cause this problem.

Stop the service and run -configonly interactively.
