Uninstall v6

Postby Penfold » Fri Jun 29, 2012 2:29 pm

How would I go about uninstalling v6 of F@H from my Intel iMac?

I found these commands somewhere way back in April :

sudo /usr/local/fah/uninstall

rm -rf ~/Library/Folding@home/ ... this one got rid of prefs and work data. I manually removed the Pref Pane from /Library/PreferencePanes.

The first one returned "command not found". In place of 'usr', I put the name of my home directory - is this the mistake? And what does 'local' mean?

A little bit of reading around would have been appropriate on my part

Uninstaller available here, as posted by Joe H in a thread two below this one.

I still would like to know why the Terminal command wouldn't work. Anyone? :)

The directory /usr/local/ is a system directory for installing non-OS software under Unix and Linux. The V6 installer followed that pattern as OS X is based on FreeBSD unix underneath the graphics interface. So parts of the app are located there, not in your home directory, and that is why your modified command failed. The uninstaller wraps all that up for you and takes care of most of the locations where pieces are located. Of course if you have a non-standard install things get a little more complicated.

Now that is the short version, and details are deliberately left semi-specific. The use of /usr/local dates back to the early years of Unix, and there have been many debates on what should be installed there and what belongs elsewhere.

Joe, that's a good enough explanation for me, thanks.

Your link to the uninstaller was good. It raises another question, as is often the case with me: What happens to the piece of software that does the uninstalling, once it's done its job? The .zip file goes in the bin, but what of the .mkpg file?

command not found because the script was named uninstall.sh

You would need to manually toss any uninstaller mpkg into the Trash after you're done with it.

Where would I find that mpkg file, calxalot?

It did its work and vanished! :)

It's probably in Downloads under your home folder.
That would be the default with Safari. Other browsers might put it on your Desktop.

The package does not delete itself, as that would be unexpected behavior, and not nice to Installer.app.

If the package zip archive automatically went to the Trash, you're probably using Safari with 'Open "safe" files after downloading' enabled.
I would recommend you disable that option in Safari > Preferences > General.

It's not in the Downloads folder. I tried mpkg in Spotlight but it wasn't found. Other mpkg files were found. It's not a problem, I'm guessing.

Good tip re 'Open safe files', thanks. I have the latest version of ClamXav, but best to be safer than sorrier.
