how to check if your server is down?

Hi, I've found the server status page but I can't tell if it impacts my client; here's the latest from my log:

I can't tell from that log, would need to see the starting section with the #############.

What client version, should be 6.29 or newer? Any client settings like -advmethods? -verbosity 9?

On Serv Stat, I see some servers with 'X' jobs for OSX clients, but only if you have v6.34 or above, i.e. if you upgrade to V7. The 3 servers that still had jobs for 6.29 are either out of work or offline.

With the client for OS X it would be version 6.29, development of V6 for OS X stopped there. No version 6.30 or newer was released until the V7 betas. The one server that has had jobs for OS X using V.6.29 the last year is listed as down as of 16:40 PDT, 171.64.65.54.

There are servers with projects using the A4 core that have available work for OS X if it is running the V7 client. If you are still running 10.6.8, V7 is fairly stable on OS X.

P.S. A message has been sent to Dr. Kasson whose server this is.

So to answer the more general question, you can look at the far right column of data on the serv stat page and find the minimum client version supported. Compare that against which servers have an X for OSX in the Weight column, compared to which of those have work units available. And also check if that server is not in Reject mode.

For OSX, you can sort by SMP to shorten the list of servers to compare.

See how easy that is. ;)

I'm looking to update to Mt. Lion soon, so is V7 stable on 10.8 yet?

Server still seems to be down at this time. :(

Parameters: -advmethods -smp 4

Server was just brought back up a short while ago, so is available again.

As for V7 on 10.7 or 10.8, as I understand it the FAHClient portion is stable. It is the FAHControl GUI app that is not stable. Certain actions such as resizing its window or sub panes, selecting from or refreshing the log display, and some others that I would have to look up, can cause FAHControl to crash or do odd things. Sometimes it also manages to take FAHClient and the folding process down with it. This is based on reports of persons who have tested V7 on 10.7, I would expect the issues to be pretty much the same on 10.8. I will be testing on 10.7 myself soon, just need to set up an external drive to boot from temporarily as I have to stay at 10.6.8 until I replace a number of apps that I need that do not work past that OS.

If you want to try V7, you can install it without uninstalling V6 as they are installed in totally separate locations by default. Just don't run both at the same time. As long as you take things one step at a time, don't do any window resizing with FAHControl when you have it open, you should be okay. FAHControl does not need to be open for folding to continue, just to configure or stop and start folding. When you first install, disconnect from the network if possible until you configure V7 with your username, password, etc. This is because the installer downloads work immediately and you might not get the bonus on that first WU. This is on the fixit list for the installer. Also, FAHControl was programmed to use Ctrl-X, Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V for cut, copy and paste instead of the OS X standard Cmd-X, Cmd-C and Cmd-V. Also on the list to be changed at a later release, including a bug where paste does not work in all places it should. One of which is the passkey entry, so you will need to enter that carefully. Post any questions you have, there are several who can answer.

So I've since upgraded to 10.8 and all seems to be working fine!

The server for V6 seems to be down quite frequently lately. Should I upgrade to V7 at this point for a more reliable server?

You can give it a try. What going to V7 will get you is the ability to run the A4 core and projects that use it. There are several servers that have those projects and are set to give them to OS X clients. In theory you can still get WU's from this A3 server, but the last time I did was over nine months ago. I think they adjusted the assignment settings so it would be primarily used by V6 clients.

I mentioned the issues with FAHControl in my previous post, once you get folding running the FAHClient should be okay running in the background as it does not have the graphical interface issues of the control app. Support for V7 is here - viewforum.php?f=77.
