Re: Please consider V7

I have not yet installed the 7.3.2 Beta on any of my Mac's yet, so have not run into this yet. But after doing a bit of reading of your log and the forum, as well as looking at what documentation I could find, I think you may be running into one of the new defaults for this version of the V7 client. It appears the default Performance Level for laptops in 7.3.2 is Light:
20:09:12: <power v='light'/>

That level sets the folding client to SMP:1. There should be some work available for that setting, but from reading other reports, people have reported problems getting assigned low end A4 WU's over the last few weeks. That is an issue that is being looked into. To get back the SMP:2 setting, changing the performance level to Full would be how folding used to use your system. The Idle setting might be another option. Perhaps this coming weekend I will load 7.3.2 onto my MacBook and see how different settings work and can get back on that. Or others who have used this version can weigh in.

P.S.

I will look at the other forum postings and see if your questions on the V7 client can be merged with an existing topic or should be a new topic.

Thanks for the great info Joe. Hard to know what all the flags do and which ones will get me folding most efficiently.

So I went in and changed the Performance level by setting the power flag to 'idle' instead of 'light' (I do use this computer for other stuff and not sure if 'full' will slow me down?). I also changed the cpu-priority flag to 'low' (I think it was on idle) to see if that gets more folding done as well.

So I had some success.. looks like it downloaded the a4 core and started to do work. But then I got the message: "Core Shutdown: CLIENT_DIED". And nothing seemed to happen after that. I stopped the client and tried to restart it.. but still not folding. Here's a excerpt from the log. Let me know if you guys have any suggestions. I'd love to get this machine folding asap.

Thanks,
Peter

That's because it's a beta which was announced here: viewtopic.php?f=87&t=23582 and the download link is there. You really should read that topic, especially the first post -- and maybe everything that's in that forum.

Thanks again for all the tips. I set the 'power' setting to full and now I am folding and my system is still fully responsive. Working great.

I just did read through all the pages in that beta discussion thread. I guess the messages I was seeing was just the core pausing. Good to know.

I still think they should take down the V6 download links since those seem to be dead ends (saves some people some time, if the V6 client is really not functional anymore). Or at least make a note that those clients can't really get WU's anymore.

Well all is well and folding continues. Thanks again for the help.

Peter, what dead links are you talking about?

Read his post on the previous page. He would like the v6 mac clients removed from the download page that was just updated. There are no more work units for v6 mac clients, so it's confusing to mac users why their freshly downloaded client isn't working. The links aren't actually dead, but the client is, and should be removed, like some of the other older clients.

The links aren't dead, the download of the V6 software is currently a dead end because there is no work for the OS X V6 F@H client. I brought that up in this post, Main Website Needs Updating. At the least, a note that the client is currently unable to get work should be added.

Links removed, and I added an explanatory note. When there is work available for the OS-X flavor of v6, we can undo this to put the links back.

What about some of the other older downloads? Do we still need a v6.23 GPU(2) client? v6.41 covers both. Same for SMP v6.34. No need for a v6.23 UNI client. Just run v6.34 without the -smp switch. The v6.30 SMP client was already marked deprecated a long time ago. It should be removed as well.

And why isn't the Linux SMP client listed under the high performance clients? Do we even need that distinction any more? Just make one big list.
