Won't start folding [Failed to Read Stream]

I am new to this and nothing is happening. I suspect it is because my computer is not reaching the server, but I don't know what to do. Any help is much appreciated!

Welcome to the folding support forum.

Generally, messages such as "Failed to read stream" and "Received short response, expected 272 bytes, got 0" point to the folding client being blocked by either a firewall or anti-malware software. The FAHClient process needs to have the same access as a browser, HTTP, over ports 80 and/or 8080 to send and receive data.

You can test this out by temporarily disabling such software. If you can then download the various data and work files, that is where the problem exists and you would need to adjust the rules to allow access.

In addition you may have to exclude the FAHClient data directory from anti-malware scans. The binary data and executable files sometimes can trigger false positives for malware.

No, in this case it's a more general failure to receive packets from Stanford -- it affected a core download as well. Follow Joe's advice.

You may have 0 bytes GPU.txt as well -- see here for that.

I use only Windows Defender. I added an exclusion folder and process exclusion with no change. I then disabled Windows Defender totally - no change. I have no other firewall or anti-malware software that I am aware of (new to Windows 10 though, so don't know what they have built in). I wonder about my router (suspect it must have a firewall) but I only know how to do basic stuff in my router. Interestingly, I can get to https://folding.stanford.edu/ but when I tried to go to http://folding.stanford.edu/home it tells me that it can't reach that page. I went into my router and found that my static DNS had changed (probably when I was looking around at things trying to figure this out before I asked for help). Changed it back to the static DNS required for my Unblock-Us.com account and now I can go to the FAH home page, but I still can't get to the work server 155.247.166.220 or collection server 155.247.166.219 - when I clicked the link in FAHControl I got a "can't reach this page". Off to see if I can create a change in my router that lets it through. I won't be making any huge changes, I promise!

Another possibility: I've seen a report of a problem with the security certificate on one or more of Stanford's server. (It has already been reported to Stanford.) If Windows Defender blocks the site without telling you about the problem, that could be what's happening.

I expect it won't take them long to fix it, but in the meantime, post a fresh copy of your log and let us know what happens if you open:

I tried the power solution, no luck.

The assign2.Stanford.edu website said their was a certificate error but when I clicked on the "continue this anyway" I got a picture of a protein and "Assignment Server version 3.5.7"

That's what your browser SHOULD get. Unfortunately FAHClient doesn't give you the option to "continue anyway"

Have you tried storing the exception? (That may not fix the problem but maybe we can confirm that was the initial problem.) Stanford does need to straighten out their security certificates.

Unfortunately, I think the problem is bigger than that. I can get to the Assignment Server but it redirects me to a Work Server and then the download hangs. (Windows 8.1)

I don't see where on Windows Defender you can except any particular websites. I did turn off Windows Defender and it went straight to that page, but I don't think it is helping. Below is my log right after I turned off Defender.

No, the browser blocks bad certs also. PG needs to fix this, and then setup a reminder to renew as this seems to happen every summer.

Failed to read stream

I tried getting an answer on the newcomers forum, but no luck. I suspect the same people hang out here, so I doubt I will solve my problem but figured I would ask just in case (no offense meant to anybody who tried to help me before). I installed the software without issue, it seems to be running well, but I get the "failed to read stream" error and it won't start folding. I can get to the public F@H pages, when I click the Project in the Client Advance Control, I see a webpage explaining the project, but when I click two server links I get an error saying the browser can't find that page. I think it is a router issue, but not smart enough to fix it. Any help is much appreciated.

Please describe your network set up in detail. Include the type of router and how the PC is connected to the router. Also what kind of Internet service provider.

Then describe what the Unblockus account does. That sounds a lot like a DNS based blacklist, that could easily cause the failed to read stream error. I get the same failed to read stream error at work inside our test lab firewalled sandbox, as one would expect.

My router is a Sitecom X4 N300 using Telecom Italia DSL internet (12 Mbps download speed, 1 Mbps upload speed). The PC is typically connected to router via wireless connection and Speedtest.net tells me I get 11.0-11.5 Mbps speed with that. I currently connected a Cat 5 cable and I get 11.6 Mbps and no change in symptoms. The wireless uses WPA2 for security and the router has a static DNS. The static DNS is to push things through unblock-us.com, which selectively changes your IP address for a small set of websites (like Netflix), but for the vast majority of sites it doesn't change anything (if I go to findmyipaddress.com, it lists an Italian IP address). Thinking that might be the problem, I changed my static DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. (Google's DNS) but no change. Likewise, disabled my static DNS, but no luck there either. I am willing to try just about anything, so any advice is welcome.
