GPU cannot complete WU in time before expiration

Post by Carl-Marius »

Hi,

I have a computer with a GeForce 705A and Nvidia version 361.43 installed.

Both the computer CPU and GPU is working, but I have a problem with the GPU;
Every time it gets a WU, it has a very long ETA before it is finish,
and this is usually about 14 days, and the expiration happens after about 16 days.

This leads to a lot of work on the WU, but it then expires before it has completed,
and then it starts all over again.

The CPU does not have this issue.

The configuration is the following:

ID: 00, Description: CPU:3
ID: 01, Description: GPU:0:GF119 (GeForce 705M)

CPU: Intel (R) Core(TM) i3-3240T CPU @ 2.90Ghz
CPU ID: GenuineIntel Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9

GPU 0: NVIDIA:2 GF119 [GeForce 705M]

Folding: 7.4.4
SVN Rev: 4130
Branch: fah/trunk/client
Options /TP /nologo /EHa /Qdiag-disable:4297, 4103, 1786, 279 /0x -arch:SSE /QaxSSE2, SSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2 /Qopenmp /Qrestrict /MT /Qmkl
Platform: win32 XP
Bits: 32
Mode: Release

There is no newer graphic card driver than the installed one.

Do you have any suggestions to what I can try, so that my GPU can work on WU's that it can complete in time and not waste time :-)

Kind regards,
Carl-Marius

You can ask for smaller projects (but we don't guarantee how long they will remain available, since core 15 is deprecated) by adding the following options to you GPU slot :
client-type=beta
max-packet-size=small

In Advanced Control, select Configure -> Slots -> select the GPU slot and click Edit button -> in Extra slot options, select Add button and add the parameters (use the Add button twice). Confirm with OK, then Save. The new settings will be taken into account next time your client will request a WU.

Agree with toTOW. Note that, although you are setting the Beta flag, the resulting WUs are NOT beta WUs. The combination of flags is used to request the older, smaller WUs that are appropriate for your GPU.

Hi toTOW and davidconton,

Thank you for your fast answer, I will try this configuration setting.

But will I not have the same problem, when the core 15 expires as a whole when it is deprecated?

Should I then just disable my GPU for folding?

Kind regards,
Carl-Marius

Once those older Core_15 WU's run out, disabling your GPU slot for folding would be the option to take. The other option for folding at that point is upgrading your GPU to a more recent or more powerful one. The 705 is a fairly old GPU, as I understand it the 705 is a rebranded GT 520. That was pretty low end even when it first came out.
