SOLVED: WU failing to upload

Post by Runaway1956 »

I installed and started the client just a couple days ago. First few WU completed, and uploaded properly. Now, I have two WU which have failed to upload. Of course, I get no credits for myself, or for my team if they never upload. Any advice? It doesn't appear to be a network problem, at least at my end, because I have full use of the internet - I'm posting here, after all.

Thanks in advance!

Tail of client log below.

What is the elapse time between when the upload starts and then fails?

Checking logs for that info, 7im - but first, the remaining WU has finally uploaded. Between 15:29;42 and 15:44:45 the client uploaded ~82% then failed, on that next-to-last attempt. ~15 minutes

16:26:41:WU01:FS00:Final credit estimate, 4625.00 points

So - that inidicates that the problem is with my ISP, and probably not the server? And, that sounds reasonable, because I have a truly sucky ADSL connection. It sucks so bad, that a local group has formed, documenting bad performance for the FCC. I'll keep this little lesson in mind.

The servers have a default connection max set at 15 minutes. That's why it's getting dropped.

Power cycle the modem, and confirm it is connected at the rated speed.

Also, confirm that you do not have a BitTorrent running on your machine, as it can use an appreciable part of your bandwidth, slowing down other things.

I understand that Windows 10 (if you happen to be running it) also uses BitTorrent technology so you can help them distribute updates.

7im - that is the thing - I almost never get my rated speed. It truly is a poor connection. This is the group on Facebook which is documenting the poor performance of the service we get - https://www.facebook.com/groups/480250435509602/ And, we are pretty much stuck with poor connections, unless and until the telco upgrades things for us.

As far as I am concerned, my problem with F@H is "solved" because it isn't a F@H problem. It's a problem with my telco's infrastructure, which I have documented, and added to the list of problems to be addressed by the telco.

@ bruce - this connection is shared via WIFI with the wife, and whichever sons happen to be home at the time. My connection is wired, everyone else is on WIFI. The next time I see a connection problem, I'll just turn the radio off to stop the torrenting. My box is an Arch Linux box, so I know what traffic is coming and going from it. Other boxes in the house are alll Win7. Additionally, my box is in the router's DMZ, so I know the firewall isn't affecting me. It is just an extremely poor DSL connection.

OK. I was just looking to see of there was anything you could do to improve the situation while waiting on the telco.

I've used a couple of sites that are just too far from the CO to get a good connection over copper.

Bruce, are these large work units? Something appropriate to request PG lengthen the connection timeout?

The facebook post suggests that, at times, his connection slows down to dialup modem speeds with a high packet loss rate. I think Runaway1956 has already said his connection is below par at times.

While ISPs speeds and processing speeds tend to increase along with the size of the uploads, so this has been mostly a non issue, there will always be some late adopters. Maybe time to consider raising the default connection time out to 20 minutes on all WS and CS
?
