Okay, so I'm relatively new to F@H and looking forward to contributing. I've created a group, gotten my friends involved, and started folding with my laptop. However, I wanted to get some serious work done by leaving my gaming desktop and it's 560 Ti GPU folding 24/7. However- when I tried to fold the first time, I left it overnight, and when I came back in the morning there was an error message saying the client had crashed but the system was still being fully utilized folding. I had to do a hard reset because I couldn't get the client to reopen. After reinstalling the client, I no longer had this issue, but instead the client doesn't even show up in the taskbar (though it is running when I check in task manager) and my browser crashes whenever I try to open it while the computer is folding so I can't pause it through the web client. I don't know what to do about this as I can fold, but when I want to stop folding it won't allow me to change any of the settings because the advanced client from the system tray is nowhere to be found and the web client won't work at all. I'm running Windows 10, on an Athlon II x4 640, 8gb RAM and a Zotac GTX 560 Ti.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the folding support forum, v-raze.
Is your system overclocked? If sounds like that might be the problem. Back off the overclock and see what happens.
FAH uses more resources that most other things you might be doing, so an overclock that's apparently stable running games will often be unstable when running FAH -- and lockups are one sigh of that condition.

Yes, my system is ordinarily both overclocked (GPU) and undervolted (CPU). However, putting both back to stock clocks/voltages was one of the first things I tried- no beans. Still have the same problems.bruce wrote:Welcome to the folding support forum, v-raze.

I did read that, the first time. I can't get at the log file like I normally do because the icon is not visible, so I can't open advanced control by right clicking it. Or have you tried Method 3 in the Windows directions and opened the log file directly? It takes no more access to a computer than opening up FAHControl.

And yes, I know I can get the log file from the folder, just been busy is all, sorry.
I got it to work just fine set to medium (minus the icon still being gone), but when I turned it to full, all my programs crashed again. Only things I have open are MSI afterburner to monitor GPU temps, and chrome to watch my progress folding. I'll try running without afterburner open next...

In an ideal world, a person can believe that they can do enough benchmarking to create a stable overclock.
In an ideal world, the drivers monitor heat, voltage, etc.. and maximize fan speed, clock rate, etc. to maximize performance without human intervention. (This applies to either a CPU slot or a GPU slot but when talking about heat, there's also the question about who manages the case fan for the sum of the two.)
In both cases, it's not an ideal world.
If you want to fix the symptoms you describe, I'd assume it's most likely heat or power related and start with additional cooling. If you're happy folding at Medium, that's fine, too.

1st Thing I'd do is clean out the heatsink on the graphics card, take the card out, remove all the excess dust and then blow through the heatsink a few times. After that I'd say power - what PSU do you have in that rig

Alright- I doubt it's got to do with thermals as I've delidded and repasted the GPU die (Fermi GPUs have an IHS), and set the fan at the maximum 70% while folding (Zotac has this upper limit hardware locked, not even NiBiTor could save it) and I get stable load temps of 78ºC while folding on full, well below the card's max of 100º.Nathan_P wrote:1st Thing I'd do is clean out the heatsink on the graphics card, take the card out, remove all the excess dust and then blow through the heatsink a few times. I don't think that it's the power either- I've got a relatively new 500W unit from EVGA, don't recall exact model, but their PSUs are pretty good and I shouldn't be anywhere near 500W of draw even without my undervolt enabled.
Regardless, I did plan on water cooling this card to make it quieter, better overclocking, completely remove the IHS, and simply because I can- but I doubt this will solve my folding issues.
And I still have these issues without any overclocking or overvolting whatsoever.
I did find a workaround that seems to be allowing me to limp along- I set the BIOS to use the onboard Radeon HD 4200 graphics as display and have F@H still folding on the 560Ti. This has so far allowed me to fold on full all weekend while I was away without the client or control crashing, but the integrated graphics don't display at my monitor's native 1600x900 and are generally a pain to work with, not to mention that if I actually wanted to game I'd have to switch it all back. Any other ideas on how I can increase stability to combat the crashing I'm having?
