Every client attempt to get work should include 2 servers. One on port 80. One on port 8080. Example:

Code: Select all

16:53:54:WU01:FS00:Connecting to 171.67.108.45:8080
16:53:55:WARNING:WU01:FS00:Failed to get assignment from '171.67.108.45:8080': No WUs available for this configuration
16:53:55:WU01:FS00:Connecting to 171.64.65.35:80
16:53:55:WARNING:WU01:FS00:Failed to get assignment from '171.64.65.35:80': No WUs available for this configuration
16:53:55:ERROR:WU01:FS00:Exception: Could not get an assignment
So I have to ask again, is port 8080 blocked on your network?

Reboot your home router if you haven't done so recently.

Also, here is what a successful WU assignment looks like (for my CPU slot).

Code: Select all

22:40:52:FS00:Unpaused
22:40:53:WU01:FS00:Connecting to 171.67.108.45:8080
22:40:54:WU01:FS00:Assigned to work server 128.252.203.2
22:40:54:WU01:FS00:Requesting new work unit for slot 00: READY cpu:4 from 128.252.203.2
22:40:54:WU01:FS00:Connecting to 128.252.203.2:8080
22:40:56:WU01:FS00:Downloading 1.16MiB
22:40:56:WU01:FS00:Download complete

I rebooted router- no change. Checked with Avast Shields off.
I checked network. The gateway is showing in the Local Area Conn. but the separate Gateway is showing disconnected.
I have repaired the network a few times too- to no effect to F@H.
Mail and browsing are working ok THE DEFAULT GATEWAY IS SHOWING ONE DIGIT BELOW MY IP Address
FAH Local defaultport 36330 is NOT showing up in my Netstat viewer either.
I ran the connection wizard- no change- I can ask for Gateway connection. it does it- shows connected and then flips straight back to disconnected.
I previously toggled the host file on/off- this has always been in use. No change either way.
I would add a pic of the data for network but don't use external sites needed.
is there a way to put pics up directly? Ages since I tried this..
Port monitor shows Port 80 being used but the address Local port 1506 to 77.234.43.24 is not the same as F@H shown in log. 171.67.108.204
No Port 8080 shown in use- as before.
FAH Client is shown as permitted in Firewall.

All very odd- I haven't changed and settings knowingly since before the work failed to download anyway.

That address - 77.234.43.24 - is part of that Avast Cloud, are you using one of their anti-malware products? It is not connected with F@H at all.

I tried their remote connection service a while back but it flaked and I've since removed the connection.
I have got IO Malware Fighter on board with updated files.
Turning off makes no difference to FAH.
Both Avast & Anti Malware have always run ok with FAH

I can't run it as it's Win64 and I'm Win32.
GPU is crunching on Boinc projects OK.
I've run EMSA Port blocker and it shows no blocked local or remote ports.
33630 reports as listening. [FAH]
It looks more and more as if code in WS may not be good for XP now.

I'm also not getting Core17/18 GPU work for my Win XP system anymore after the Chodera Lab plfah1-* servers switched to Accept Only
(on June 23, servers 140.163.4.231 / 232 / 233 / 234 / 235). I did mostly get P1046x (Core17) WUs from server 140.163.4.233.
I did get the same message as you and shut down my Win XP system with a GTX780 Ti (more than a week ago) and will upgrade to Win7 soon.

It would be good if they just left a message on the return server before they disappear
-so users [contributors] know.
..If this is in some way possible,of course!

I still need to resolve if my port 8080 will make any difference-if it was working right.

I think there is a difference between the CPU and GPU Assignment Servers (AS).
The CPU AS connects to 171.67.108.45:8080 and the backup AS is 171.67.108.204:80 (edit: or 171.64.65.35:80).
The GPU AS connects to 171.67.108.45:80 and the backup AS is 171.67.108.204:80.

BTW: The backup AS 171.67.108.204:80 seems to be down for more than a week now.

FAH tends to push the limits of science and that means that some things can no longer be done with WindowsXP or with 32-bit CPUs. At some point all new projects will require 64-bit and all new projects will require Windows7 or above. The studies of "easy" proteins have been or soon will be completed. I can't predict when that will happen and I doubt anybody else can.

BOINC still runs a number of projects that don't need these capabilities so that may be your best choice until you're ready to upgrade.

Fair enough- the science is all, as they say!
I have the cpu work blocked anyway -so Dutch force has it right there.
This doesn't show in the logs.
I will end up upgrading, some time -but till then Boinc is fine [for now?]
I can check to see if work gets put on for Core 17/18 now and then..
8 years not a bad stint!

I see folding is still going on Win32 for CPU work.
My production is woeful on Xp compared to GPU 560ti - still installed and working fine.
I have decided to consider upgrade to Win 7 Pro- as 8 was reported worse and 10 doing endless upgrades.
Can someone update me on whether this will permit useful GPU F@H work for a the reasonably near future?
TIA

I'm thinking of the same upgrade and would appreciate your thoughts on this move.

There are two (or more) issues here, but the important one has to do with the sequence and frequency that FAH scientists create new projects -- and how that compares to the frequency that the supporting software (OS, drivers, etc) is updated.

The word "SUPPORTED" has some interesting implications.

CPU drivers don't really get updated unless you update your OS, and projects for CPUs rarely get updated. The exception is that FAHCore_A7 can take advantage of AVX hardware (and drivers) but FAH cloned FAHCore_A7 and recompiled it to work with SSE2, so the didn't force the obsolesce of CPU projects that worked with SSE2 (on FAHCore_A4). The only remaining question is whether they compiled the A7 cores to run on top of 32-bit or 64-bit libraries -- and they probably support all four combinations, but I'm not sure.

For GPU drivers, the situation is quite different -- and the fact that AMD and NVidia have decided that future drivers will only be 64-bit will, at some point, potentially force future decisions.

If you have an "old" OS and/or "old" hardware, that's still working, it will probably continue to work as long as those who design new FAH Projects don't need scientific capabilities that are only found in new FAHCores -- and those new FAHCores don't get recompiled with versions that work with older hardware/software.
