Hello everyone :)

Post by JungleOnion »

Hope you are doing fine. I got very interested in the project and decided to jump in to see how it works because the pure idea sounds very nice to me. Hopefully not too utopical but we'll see.

But anyway, I decided to start folding at the protein viewer looks very cool.

I have a problem though, I enabled my GPU to start folding but the status says its ready but what does that mean? Do I have to configure something? Almost everything is saying "unknown" and the client I it says the worker and collection servers are 0.0.0.0. I am folding with my CPU though and everything there seems to look fine.

Any help much appreciated, don't mean to double a post or post it in the wrong section but I can't seem to find a solution.

Welcome JungleOnion

Good to see you joining.

Regarding your GPU please give us more background information. What OS do you use, what GPU.
Most info we would need are in the log file you could copy from the FAHControl program.

The first 100 lines or so...once we see that we can help better.

Welcome to foldingforum.org, JungleOnion.

First guess: You're probably running Windows 10.

Microsoft distributes the drivers for your GPU but they only distribute the portions that are essential to Windows. You probably need to download the same driver from the GPU manufacturer which will also install the components needed by FAH.

Thank you for your replies, well I am actually folding on OSX 10.10 and its doing good. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1024MB
I have CUDA installed not sure if I need something else as far as drivers.

OS X is the source of the problem. GPU folding on OS X is not currently available. The background is that until last year there was a bug in the OS X implementation of OpenCL that was only fixed last year. Since then there has been no update on whether that will result in a working folding core for GPU's on OS X.

You may be able to do GPU folding using Windows through Boot Camp. That would have your Mac booted natively into Windows and would only require that you use video drivers listed as compatible with that environment.

And here we have the problem: no GPU folding supported at this point in time for us Mac user; we are CPU only.

Historically the driver implementation from Apple was not sufficient for the needs of FAH; meanwhile that seems solved (and reported working with the OpenMM framework). Assuming due to higher priorities in Development no GPU core yet made it to Macs.

That's why I have my GPU-folding systems running under Linux.

Thank you for the clarification. I was wondering how to install linux or windows as a dual boot or triple boot, I will keep looking how to properly do one and definitely start folding with my GPU hopefully :)

It sucks that there is no support for OSX but well...I know is not a good OS for mining or folding or even gaming :( Thanks for the info, mining in a CPU is not that bad though. However, How much are points valued or how do they work? I will go through the forums to see what can I find about that.

Points at Stanford are not like mining ... they're representative of donations.

There are 3rd party mining sites that award virtual currency based on FAH's points, but we don't officially support them.

Oh I understand, like bitcrystals?
