Fails to download core

Post by Bo_Herrmannsen »

i see this in the log:

22:24:41:WU01:FS01:Downloading core from
22:24:41:WU01:FS01:Connecting to web.stanford.edu:80
22:24:41:ERROR:WU01:FS01:Exception: Failed to access core package.

why would a fresh downloaded client 7.4.15 try to download something that is not there?

its also the reason why my GPU's is not folding

and since i'm new i cant post the link where it tries to download from

Re: Fails to download core

link it tries to download from is: http://web.stanford.edu/~pande/Win32/AM ... ore_21.fah

EDIT: I know a GT9800 is an old one... but hey... it still works, might be slow but why rule out hardware?

i have seen people say to update the GPU.... but why? it works and can display an image

i even have 2 of these and an sli bridge for them

Computer Specs: Specifically CPU type and speed, RAM amount and number of CPU cores, especially. Don't forget your GPU type if you're folding with it.

Core I5-2500 @ 3.3 Ghz 4 cpu cores
16GB Ram

Network Connection: Dialup? Cable? DSL? Via intranet? Any firewalls or proxy servers?

via cable TV modem no proxy and no firewall (other than what win 8.1 provides)

Operating System: Windows/Linux/BSD? What distro/version? Latest patches applied?

win8.1 with all updates applied

Overclocked?: What is overclocked? By how much?

No, that is for poor people

Stable?: Try a few stability testing programs if you think that FaH is crashing your computer. It may be that your PC is just unstable overall.

yes stable

Software: What version of the client are you using? Remember that Beta and prerelease versions can be unstable. What version of the core(s) are you using?

ver 7.4.15

Core 21 won't run on that older GPU, and that is why there is no core available for that device. Sorry. A GPU upgrade is in your near future.

Welcome to the folding support forum.

The 9800 is no longer getting work assigned to it, the last projects that it could be used on have ended. The assignment of a Core_21 WU is a mistake, probably due to a bad setting on either the Assignment Server or the Work Server with this project. It might also be from using the Open-Beta test version of the client. You can delete the GPU folding slot.

The status of the last GPU folding projects that video cards of the same era as your 9800 could fold is under review. But it is expected that pre-Fermi GPU's like this will be moved to the unsupported status in the near future.

P.S. I copied the log text from the site and added it to you post. Directions for posting your log are in the Welcome topic - viewtopic.php?f=61&t=26036.

Two reasons:
1) FAH uses the 3D calculation components of the GPU, not the video production components, so producing an image isn't the same as analyzing a protein.
2) A certain minimum level of driver software is required for FAH. Later drivers generally coincide with later hardware, and as the calculations become more advanced, both better hardware and better software are mandated.

If your computer has the necessary slots, a big enough power supply, and enough cooling, you may be able add a more advanced GPU just to fold and still keep the G92 to drive your monitor ... but even if they're big enough, it's a pretty complex task to get two different GPUs to run.

No sorry. you must have misunderstood my posts. The GPU stays until it cant draw a picture on the screen.

FAH not taking advantage of it is just a damn shame. It might be very slow and old but it can still work

Why not keep using it? granted i assume that the reason is that it will be very slow etc etc.... But cant the core for it be made so we can still use it ?

Just trashing hardware because its old is sad

If that advanced GPU comes with a big enough money tree i can pick on a daily basis i MIGHT considering it

and then again... it would be a big waste of money and what is worse it will burn up energy just for folding

getting 2 GPU's to run is as hard as installing the 2nd one... they both run on the same driver

Why? Because the science that can be done on this card released over 8 years ago is limited. The hardware features and the software versions of OpenCL supported are insufficient for current folding projects and the current Core_21 will never run on this era card.. As it was, these cards started out on projects that used Core_11. Those projects ran out over 2 years ago. Some, not all, of the pre-Fermi GPU's could be used on Core_15 projects, those ran out last Spring.

As for your money argument, the 9800 uses well over 100 W when processing. It could be replaced with a more recent card such as the 750ti for about $125. it will use about 60 W, or about half as much as the 9800. That energy savings over time will pay for the card.

100W.... that seems high.. can the PCI-E connector even deliver that much?

found one small positive in all this

when GPU is removed it free's up one CPU core :-D

The slot itself can provide up to 75w, I think an 8 pin pci-e cable does 150w each.
