100%.

#1. Given 100% dedicated machine to FAH, do you use or recommend security software AV's etc? If so why!

#2. The other WU's or windows updates, if your folding 'good', why update? Updates can address security, but if #1 requires no AV, then why Win WU's?

Note - My three dedicated machines, only get updates from AV or Windows, or Flash drive which has been vetted on a non folder.

My Folding boxes all have to connect to the internet to send and receive WUs.

So yes to 1, and yes to 2.

If you are somehow sneaker-netting WUs to and from your folding farm, then you could potentially do without 1 and/or 2, but would be a slave to your PC.

#1 no, Windows already has a firewall and defender, so no additional security software is needed for a folding only machine
#2 yes, Windows updates are necessary or else your machine could be hacked and malware gets installed which #1 cannot prevent.

#1, same as foldy.
#2 Yes, same as foldy, and an update installed by Windows may later be needed by a newer version of the FAH client at some future point. .Net as example.

All my machines connect through my router and in most instances have a mouse, keyboard and monitor, even though I rarely use them. My theory is that as long as I don't use a browser or email or whatever on that machine, there's no reason to update virus patterns or run Window Update. If for some reason I do start up a browser on one of those machines, I immediately install Microsoft's updates and update the AV software.

I can't find the answer to this: I want to leave my machine running but can't set FAH to download new work on completion of work.

That' works for almost everybody. Please provide the information from your log requested in the signature of my first post in this topic.

Can we assume your internet connection is always available?
What security software are you running?

No to #1 and a partial no to #2.

These are dedicated Linux boxes so I just leave them as is and run software on my main (windows) machine which no longer folds. AS for updates I will download updates as an when the boxes are shut down for maintenance or i'm going on holiday.
