can't view F@H website

Post by avalanche222 »

Hi everyone.

Running into a strange issue where I can't see the F@H website on any of my computers. However if I check it on my phone (where its not using my wifi) it comes up.

Not sure if what the issue is but someone said it could be this

If one accesses the stats too often (eg one is running a bot or automatic script), our web server detects this and bans the IP in order to prevent a single person from taking too much bandwidth from everyone else. If this has happened to you, please make a post in our forum noting this issue and one of the Pande Group or Moderators will look into this issue.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

the F@H website
which website exactly?
Any of folding sites @ Stanford University I know working correctly on my machine (Win 8.1 Firefox 51). Excluding http://folding.stanford.edu/client/ and, I guess, http://folding.stanford.edu/nacl/ This is known problem they work on it AFAIK viewtopic.php?f=18&t=29577&p=292324#p292324

Neither of those websites work for me.

Also it seems that on my F@H client won't load up any new projects for me either even though I'd been running it find for days prior.

Reboot your router, and get a new IP address, see if that helps.

Tried it, didn't seem to work. Also checked and neither of my machines are getting new assignments so they're both now doing nothing

Code: Select all

Could not get IP address for assign3.stanford.edu: No such host is known.
It works from here. Apparently there's a problem with your DNS.
assign3 should be equated to VSP11 can you get to it? ... or directly to 171.67.108.45?

Code: Select all

Pinging VSP11.stanford.edu [171.67.108.45] with 32 bytes of data:

I'm unsure what you mean by "assign3 should be equated to VSP11 can you get to it?" but if I put in 171.67.108.45 into my browser then I am able to get to the Folding @ Home assignment page.

What bruce means by assign3 should equate to VSP11 is that they are the same host, just assign3 is an alias to that server's IP. That way the client can be coded to connect to assign3, if the server is changed they just have to have that alias resolve to a different address when the DNS is queried. The actual server IP number is what was given.

Ok. So is there any thing I can do to fix this?

Create a DNS name for the missing
171.67.108.45 assign3.stanford.edu

I don't know why you're not getting automatic distribution of the DNS record. Putting in one yourself will work unless they decide to move it somewhere else, which I doubt.

How do I do that? I'm not a particularly technical person so I need some basic guidance on how to fix this issue.

OK. You might be on Windows, Linux, or MacOS and the instructions would be different. I'll assume Windows 10, but if that's wrong, tell me.

I gave it a try and it didn't work unfortunately. This is this contents of the file.

Code: Select all

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#	127.0.0.1 localhost
#	::1             localhost
171.67.108.45 assign3.stanford.edu
I also had a look at my logs and it's now saying.
00:45:33:ERROR:WU01:FS01:Exception: Could not get IP address for assign4.stanford.edu: No such host is known.

The IP address for assign4 is 171.64.65.35. But as Bruce mentioned, if your system and network is properly setup it should be getting this information from a DNS server already. Something is either blocking DNS queries or the DNS queries are not even being made.

Yeah I've got no idea what's doing this. I've tried rebooting my modem, restoring my factory settings, turning off my firewall. I've never had any issue like this before.
